I have an 04 ls v8. 88k miles. Its the 5 speed auto with the sport override (where you choose gear) (if that even matters) anyways, iv finally got the car in working order and started driving it. The trans is a disaster. It has failsafed twice and gone into “E” mode and refused to change gear. Turning the cat off fixes it untill it fails again. Iv had successfully driven it on a 20 mile trip another day and nothing went wrong. Its also had extremely aggressive shifts and not wanting to shift at intended time. At low revs its smooth enough but anything above 3,800 it jerks and throws the car around. Yes the battery was disconnected on and off for a few months and probably screwed the computer up based on the slim information on this issues i could find.

Iv put together a few fixes…
1. Fluid flush (was planning on it even if the car shifted fine)
2. Computer “flash” or replacement.
3. Solenoid replacements.

If anyone has specific details or information on this issue and potentially things too look for and fixes that would be great!

Actual fix: Have transmission rebuilt, being sure to have the servo bore inserts put in along with a few other things that people know to do when rebuilding these now.

also having similar issue. 1-2 shift is elongated and doesn't want to shift, 2-3 is harsh, won't hardly even shift into 5th at all.

My question is where would you recommend taking it to to get the trans rebuilt?

UPDATE: after driving the car around 100 miles the trans figured itself out alot more. It does the lazy 1-2 and harsh 2-3 that was previously stated. Its doing much better just the lowsy first few gears.

Could this be a clutch/torque converter? Iv heard it could be since im not really having the Sporadic shift like before.

The 2004 LS had known issues with the solenoid pack. Some early 2004 LS also may not have gotten the proper transmission fluid (missing a friction additive).

TCC only engages in 5th gear. Easy way to see if the TCC is functioning properly... is to lightly and quickly tap and let off on the brake pedal. The Rpm's will rise a couple hundred... and drop back down when the TCC re-engages.
