My mechanic (whom I totally trust and is a genius) was checking out my car for some other issues, and tells me this -

"There is a noise (like a buzz) coming at the front of the tranny, near the transmission pan and bell housing"

He told me he thought it sounded like a filter was clogged or maybe it needed a fluid change, but that the issue sounded serious and I should get it checked asap.

I have only had two small issues with this tranny. From time to time in SST, the car will not shift into 3rd, either from 4th or from 2nd, but only in SST mode. If I shift it to auto, it works fine. Turn off car and back on and issue is gone.

Other issue is an occassional hard/rough shift. Not usually too hard or too rough, but harder and rougher than the normal LS shift.

Taking it to the dealer to get checked out (under warranty) Friday.

Car is an '05 with 40k miles.

The SST issue is separate. The shifter is basically an electronic switch. Either the contacts are dirty (probably) or there is a problem with the shifter itself.

The rough engagement may be the solenoid pack or valve body.

i hear a buzzing noise in that same area on mine when it on a lift (gen 1 v8)

even though the car has SST it shouldn't be used because you got no control of the clutching... it's never a good idea to use that stuf on an automatic

i never use sst. it's not a standard tranny. it's a bogus option.

but i'm a purist...

also it says in the manual that if the tranny overheats, it will go back to auto even if in sst. wtf is that? why would i risk overheating my tranny????

it's a stupid option.

Like most issues I try to chase down on this car, the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. It also hasn't made any funny noises in a couple days. I'm listening for it, when it comes back I'll try to get them to hear it again.

Thanks for the replies!

ok so we drifted off topic. did the noise come back?

the dealer is where the buck stops. they can't say, imho, i don't know what it is. firestone can say 'take it to dealer'. so can meineke. but, if your lincoln dealer is saying that, go to another lincoln dealer. and call corporate about the first one. with the economy as sucky as it is, you will likely get a portion of your work paid by ford. just write some letters and make some phone calls. that's what lunch hours and a blue tooth are for! haha.

It has come back, but it's been totally intermittent. It also seems quieter than before, but still there. I'm about ready to try a different dealer. But my mechanic also can't find the noise, and he is the serious dopeness and knows his stuff, and if he can't find it it's gotta be a tough nut to crack, I think.

But yes, it is making the noise still.
