The other night while leaving a restaurant, I was backing out onto a hill and noticed another car was also backing up into my car. Well to avoid the hit I slammed the gas hard, now my tranny is shifting late from 1st gear. It will also downshift into first almost all the time and stay there until high in the RPM's. From reading some tech. articles this sounds like the 1-2 accumulator problem?? I was planning on doing the j-mod, accumulator upgrade, fluid and filter change, but was wondering if anybody has had this problem and the above has not fixed it? I found a few other posts with these symptoms, but no follow-up as to what the problem was.

Thanx:)

I had the same symptoms but that was after the accumulator upgrade because I didnt put the snap ring back in all the way.

I think you should go ahead and do the accumulator upgrade. You will probably see right away whats broken when you take it apart, most likely a spring. While you have it apart you may as well do the jmod and change the fluids.

Well I did the j-mod and 1-2 acumulator upgrade but it's doing the same exact thing. From reading another post from "abrahamlincoln" his sypmtoms are exactly the same as mine(tranny slips in 2nd gear and downshifts quickly into first), so it looks like my one way clutch is shot.

A this point I have three options that I'm thinking about:

Have the existing tranny rebuilt? Place I talked to says he will update the tranny and will cost around $1,000.

Use a tranny I have out of a 94 in my yard. The car shifted fine when I drove it in the spring.

Find a 98 tranny somewhere that is good or order a new one from a vendor on here.

Thoughts???????:)

What are your goals for the car, any mods that will boost power? Is it going to see any strip time or do you drive aggressively?

The car already has exhaust and possibly will have gears soon, but that's about it. I don't drive the car hard at all, but might see the strip once a year.

If that's the kind of use it will see, and you want to go the cheaper route I would source a low mileage 98+ trans, give it a jmod and enjoy.

Was it doing this before you replaced the accumulator?

It was doing it before I replaced the accumulator, I thought it might be that, but now pretty sure it's that intermediate clutch.

I think I might just use the tranny I have for now and swap the parts I put in the 93.

Another quick question if I decide to go with a 98. I know the harness has to be re-pinned and I have the diagram, but does anythng else need to be changed? I thought I remember reading the TCC solenoid also, but can't find that now?

Thanx

Well I pulled apart the trany today and the one way clutch came out in pieces. Looks like it was the one way clutch afterall. I have the 98 tranny in, but haven't tested it yet.

Well I was quoted around $1000 to have the tranny gone through and update that one way clutch to the mechanical diode. I found a 98 trany with 80,000 mi. in tiverton and went that route instead. Not sure what I am going to do with the one I pulled out, might just go for scrap.
