A few months ago my ABS would intermittently turn on while braking. It seemed to be on days when it was between 40 and 60 degrees with higher humidity. It wasn't something that really was happening all too often. About 2 weeks ago the traction light turned on and C1286 popped up. I took it to get it diagnosed and was told it needed an ABS module. I was told it can only be a new module because it has to be reprogrammed. Unfortunatly this repair is $1100. Not something I want to do right now. Anyone have any other suggestions? I will spend the money if I have to but with 170,000 mi on a 02 V8 I don't know how worth it that money will be.

You can replace it with a used ABS module. They are reprogrammable. Either they don't know what they are doing, or they are trying to rip you off. Would you even know if they really put a new ABS module in?
If you only have traction control and not AdvanceTrac, then you don't even need to reprogram the used replacement module as long as it comes out of another LS of the same model year that also didn't have AdvanceTrac.

It does have advancetrac. Dealer just told me I can use an old one and they would just reprogram it then. Do I have to replace the module and the hydraulic unit or can i replace just the module with a used one? Sorry for the 20 questions but im looking to not spend $1100 on this.

AFAIK, the electronics are built in to the hydraulic assembly aren't sold separately. (The hydraulic unit and the ABS module are one and the same.)
I'd try really hard to get an agreement from them that if this doesn't fix it, whatever else they have to do will be at their expense. This approach has paid off big time for me before.
My 02 Lincoln LS did the same exact thing. Next will be the air bag light. Then the radio will not operate properly, and horn will not work intermittenly . All of this is connected via the "clockspring" This things happened to mine LS also. This fixed all the electronics problems the car was experiencing. I replaced it myself. Was not a bad job at all. Just be sure and take the positive battery off before doing any work on this project. You can "google" lincoln ls clockspring and find directions for this task.

i said that i DONT see how a bad clockspring could/would give you a code and a problem with the AdvanceTrac system. the only problems i could see anybody having with a bad clockspring would be with the devices that actually use the clock spring, such as the horn, the airbag, the cruise control, or the radio controls.
