Hi. I have a 1997 Town Car. I'm curious: how much hp can the transmission safely handle?

stock?
be controls says with there valve body recalibration kit and cooler it can hold 600hp
that is on a new one though

Thanks. That's right about where I want to eventually be, but initially, I certainly won't be there. I mainly wanted to know because I needed to decide where to start. No point in adding power if the transmission won't hold. It sounds like I'll be safe, though, for a while.

a stock 4r should hold 400 hp saftley, however it is reccomended that the valvebody and tourqe converter be modified among other things

i sugest you give alan over at dirty dog performance a ring, he is a 4r specialist

It will hold 400 hp. Once you start clearing 450hp is where the problems begin.
But upgrading a few thing like the converter, valve body, deeper pan, secondary cooler, and rear lube mod, won't hurt either!
