So I have only had my 04 lsv8 for a week, but it seems the screen is too dark and I can't figure out why.

I went into the screen settings and adjusted the brightness all the way up.

The lights are not on, and it still seems dim. I've searched the forums and Google to see if others have had this problem and what their solution was, but I came up empty.

Is my screen backlight going out?

Dimmer beside the headlight switch? Mine doesn't have the THX system so I'm not sure whether it's actually affected by it.

It is, but only when the lights are on and the nav screen is not on day mode.

It could well be that the bulb(s) are failing.

I also noticed the hud display with gas mile/etc is dimmer than the other side which shows trip mileage....

In the touch screen I see a background interference type wave ....hard to explain, but it basically looks like interference.

My coils are going bad, and I bought a set off amazon, just waiting for them to get here. Can coils that are going bad cause interference with the electronics?

And if the bulb/backlight is going bad...can I buy that and replace it like in a laptop? Or do I need a whole new screen...and where can I find that besides dealership? Maybe a used one on ebay?

Is it cold there? Temps below ~60º will cause a darkish screen until the LCD warms up. I notice this a lot when it's "cold" in the morning. Also, did you also adjust tehe contrast? Is the screen in auto, day or night mode?

It's not cold here. I did adjust the brightness/contrast but only to make it brighter....and its on "auto" mode

I also notice my hud which shows fuel mileage left, and other functions like oil is dimmer than the other side which displays trip mileage. Is if possible they are connected?

It's not a HUD (Heads Up Display). It's just an information display. It is not connected to the nav display in any way. Unfortunately, it is normal for the information display to get darker and darker with use. I keep mine off most of the time, and it is still doing pretty good. My wife keeps hers on distance-to-empty all the time and it is now very dim.

+1
mine stays on DTE and is noticeably darker, just the nature of the beast.

The "fuel" button for the message center.

Okay I press it, but nothing happens...dang. maybe its broken. The other buttons work...

You don't happen to know if the info display lcd screen is replaceable? Can I just take one out of a 2000 lsv8? WThere's one getting parted out near me.

The nav screen is LCD. The info screen is vacuum florescent. It is not sold as a replacement part separate from the cluster. (I'm sure that with enough work with a soldering iron, you could replace just the info display.) If you replace the cluster, you have to get one from the same generation (2003 to 2006), and you have to get a dealer to marry it to the PCM (unless you have a really good scan tool that can do this).

The info system buttons are a common repair part, usually sold with the center vents.

Thanks joegr,

I removed the vent piece so i could see whats up with the buttons, Needs to be glued, and when i held it together the fuel button started working again, so thats good. Time to buy epoxy, or something of the sort.

JBWeld is your friend ;)

jbwelded worked quickly and the fuel button is working again. Used jbweld on my ebrake and traction assist button too. They were hot glued before....that doesn't have much strength, broke em off like the second time I used em.

Now I have to work on an annoying creaking / squeaking sound. Everytime I go over uneven roads or bumps I hear a little plastic sounding squeak. Read on a bmw forum to treat the door weather stripping and sills with wd40. I hope that works .

No, i think the screen is on the way out unfortunately. >_<

It flickers from light to dim.....I believe its the backlight...which is easy enough to replace in a laptop, but Idk how difficult replacement of the backlight would be on this screen. Might just start searching ebay for one.

this is normal for the screen, i have a thx and after 30 minutes it goes back. this is actually stated in the manual.

When operating the system below 32° Fahrenheit (0° Celsius), the
display screen requires 20–30 minutes warm-up to achieve maximum
brightness. Ensure that the system display setting is set to DAY mode
until maximum brightness is achieved (refer to Menu mode section).
Once maximum brightness is achieved, revert to AUTO mode display
setting.
