What is the stall speed on a stock mark viii converter? Do you really need after market stall converter with a 373 gear with boost or nitrous?

a good convertor from a vendor such as Circle D is hands down one of the best mods you can do to a mark 8.
no less than a 3200 stall, otherwise your wasting your time
I'd suggest a 3800 stall w/373's.

What he said. Invest in a transmission cooler if you don't already have one.

A mild stall (in that 3200-3800 range) works well in any application, n/a or power added. As long as it is a fully locking converter it won't have a negative impact on your mpg as well.

Finding stock stall numbers is like discovering state secrets, it seems, but I have always been of the opinion that the stock converter is in the 1800-2200 range.

I have been told 2500. Our cars have a higher then usual factory stall. And everything they said 100%.

That is possible. The only Mark Viii I have really beat on is my own, and I could have sworn that the stall in mine was set at about 1000 rpm. Mashing on the brake, the car would start to creep ahead at 900 rpm. It was insanely low. When I pulled the transmission the converter that was in it was painted purple! Obviously not stock. 2500 makes a lot more sense and that may well be what the stock ones operate at.

Stall speed depends on the amount of Torque the engine makes...So there is no "real number"..
Which is why most convertor vendors offer a one time "free restall".

One car might stall to 1100 if it's making good power, whereas a "POS" car might stall up to 2800 because it's not making enough power to lock up the stall.

I have a 3500 stall with 4.10s(started witht the stock 3.07s) and while it was to much with the stock gears for my tastes with the 4.10s I should have gone with a looser converter. I'm to lazy to pull it out again and have it restalled. Very happy with Circle D though.

I have to disagree here. Highway mileage won't be affected with the convertor locked up but around down I lost mileage. Still worth it IMHO though.

Yep my next money pit.....3800 FTMFW

If you are going to boost with a twin screw you do not want a loose convertor, nor will you need gears any taller than what you asked for.
