So since i just purchased my 04 LS, it's going to need new tires very soon, specially with the snow on the way. I kind of want to get a set of winter tires and set of performance tires for the summer. I just talked to a buddy of mine that just got some blizaks for his G8 and those are out of my price range. Now my question is do i get a decent set of winter tires now and then after winter see what kind of performance tires i can afford, or do i just buy a nice set of all-around kind of tires.

It all depends on your area. The LS will handle fairly confidently in the snow with proper snow tires and TC off if you know how to drive a RWD car in those kind of conditions.

Yeah it snows quite a bit hear in the lovely suburb of Detroit in South East Michigan. I have a yukon project truck that i plan on using for the bad days in the snow out here but it's been a while since ive driven a RWD in the snow and i drive about 2hrs every day. So i guess that's my other part to this is that i dont really plan on driving the car in all that much snow since i have the truck to drive so i guess i was wondering if buying snow tires is even worth it.
We drove our LS in Denver for about 6 years. There were three or four days a year where it just could not be driven at all. And getting up the driveway was a challenge another few days a year. This is not a good snow car.

This mechanic we use sells cooper tires, they seem ok (on paper) and can be had for about $90 a piece. cs4 touring H/v 235/50R17. Though the winter performance is a bit better than average, they have good tread wear, and are rated very quiet.
I got a couple of blizaks on the rear of Cricket, and after the last snow we had, melted with the exception of a few patches on the grass and a lump at the end of the driveway, I stopped to check the mail, and one rear tire (blizak) was on the lump of snow. When I got back into the car, it just spun on the snow.
I figure this is going to be an interesting winter season.

What size rim do you have? If the 16", I have heard very good things about the General Altimax Arctic, which you can order from Walmart.com for $76 a piece, which is about the lowest I have seen, by far. Unfortunately they don't have them listed on their site for the 17" rims, and when I called several different times to my local store, they were useless as far as seeing if they could special order them. Luckily I got a steal for 4 16" rims locally for $50, so I got four tires and and rims for under $400. Not bad for dedicated winter package.

Can't go wrong with the Arctics. Like I already posted in your other thread, I find them very quiet and comfortable. Handling suffers of course, as they are a Q-rated tire, but it's not as bad as I imagined. They do get scary when near their speed rating, but again it is to be expected of a true snow tire.
So far I only drove through some slush/snow mix, and couldn't even tell it was even on the road. They rank very highly in snow and ice grip. On a side note, last winter I ran a high performance winter tire and only got stuck once by my own fault (on my driveway), so the Arctics should plow through almost anything.

When my factory Michelin all seasons wore out I installed a set of 255/45 Continental DW extremes, which are FANTASTIC summer tires. Better dry grip, wet grip, quiter and ride nicer too.
I would definitly suggest two dedicated sets of tires, one summer, one winter.

I run the Hercules Avalanche Extreme in the winter. I bought them my first winter with the car. They ran me $500 for all four mounted and balanced. We had a good bit of snow last year and they worked awesome.
