timing chain

on a used engine how many is too many miles cuz i know that there are ls that have well over 200k on them

I'd try to stay below 100k if you could. Keep in mind it's not really the mileage that counts, but how hard they were driven and how well they were maintained. You don't know the latter two so lower the mileage is hopefully better.

nice read here. i have a question (kind of silly maybe).

is the timing chain the same as the rubber belt?

i had that (the belt) changed at 100K miles...

if not, what's the service interval of the chain? sounds like catastrophic engine failure if it breaks....

The rubber belt is just the serpentine belt.

Timing chains are meant to last a long time. some timing chains never have to be replaced.

Chains and belts do the same thing. If you own a LS you can only have chains . Don't know mileage rules on chains but thought that LS's don't need change outs.

The LS has timing chains and serpentine belts and the two are completely different.

oh ok. so chains in the ls (04 v8 here) are basically duty cycle of the engine? no service interval?

As far as i know they dont need to be messed with at all.

Some say change the adjusters at around 100k.. There is nothing in the manual specific..

There are timing belts (like the talon) and I assume that's what he was thinking.. Everyone is right.. There is only timing chains on the Ls'..

Yeah i know some vehicles have timing belts....those do need to be changed at regular intervals.

I will note that the early jaguar engines (built before 2001) had an issue with using plastic tensioners that would crack and cause the chains to break and screw up the engine.

Dont know if it affected fords version as well though.

We never had a TSB or anything.. I think all the tensioners were cheaply made..

And on the Talon, they told you to change it at a certain mileage.. :)

ok so i found a couple used motors for under 1k i found one with only 40k on it

i just need to someone to put it is for me

Some have done it in as little as 8 hours so (8hoursX$50=$400 to install).. That's not bad for a 40k mile motor.. That's what the going rate is up here..

An engine swap can be done for cheap. Under a 1000. What was your exact make? car-part.com can find low miles used engines cheap. Check it out. You could have your LS back on the road for 2000-3000 bucks. I took the transmission out of my LS in a few hours.
so i got the call back about how much my car was gonna be to be done at AAMCO was roughly 8,000 bucks for a rebuilt engine with all new gaskets, spark plugs and everything else i would need so idk what im gonna do like im gonna look around for someone to put an engine in for me cuz i dont relly wanna mess around with doing an engine swap myself.... if i cant find someone... i love my ls very much but i will be parting the whole car out if i dont fix it :( ...
