This Thread for Pioneer AVIC-D3 Installs.

this wa a ROYAL pain but its finished. I wouldnt recommend this job w/o a dremel and cutting disk. The NAV bezel had to be cut a lot just to get the AVIC-D3 to come through properly. Ill get better pics tomorrow when there is more light out.

Nice work. Looks good.

How do you like the unit so far?

Thanks Vivid! The unit is VERY nice for the money. The radio sounds awesome and has TONS of control of frequencies. The IPOD interface is very cool how it controls the IPOD through the touch screen. The DVD player works great and I have it modded to play as I drive around. Dont know about the NAV yet. I wont take my car out of the garage when its raining, like today :D

The install looks great. Let us know how its working out for ya!

By the way, this might be a noob-like question but how did you get your e-brake/cupholders like that? I dont think I've ever noticed it being integrated like that. I have an 2000 so I am really loving that setup over mine.

Thanks jmz2k5, The E-brake and cupholders are stock like that on the 03+ models.

Looks great. What features/options did you order/install with the D3? There is a current promo code for Crutchfield where the D3 is $849, free shipping, and includes a free $259 backup camera.

and where did you hook up your speed sensor wire?

Also..shouldnt your screen name be "03V8Sport"? :-)

Thanks lseguy, I have the IPOD hookup, and the steering wheel control. Thats it. I dont plan on using any bluetooth functions or much of the NAV. I didnt hook up the speed sensor yet, but do have the wiring diagram for it. Ill see how bad it will work w/o it hooked up.

I just wanted this unit as a double din to fill in the stock radio location. Running hi/lo convertors off of the stock headunit sounded like crap on my sytem. This is the only unit for the money I would consider putting in with all the functionality.

I am on my third LS since 00. I had a 00, 02, and now my 04.

I joined here when I had my 02 V8 Sport, I should be 04V8Sport now, hehe.

Gotcha.
I take it you had no desire for the NavTraffic feature/module? THAT's one of the main reasons Im looking at the D3. I live in the DC Metro area, and allegedly the Navtraffic service here works great. Only other issue I have, is I've had the woodgrain pieces on my dash for years now, and like them. Not sure how Im going to get a piece custom made to fit the modified nav plate after the plate is cut.

No, this is as much as I wanted to get with the unit, nothing else.

NAV UPDATE!!

Well after getting VERY upset with the NAV function on this unit, I finally got it figured out. My NAV was showing me to be like 2 miles from where I really was. I moved the GPS antenna to my lower dash right up against the window and it was night and day. I received 7 out of 7 on the signal meter instead of 1 of 7 before.

Even w/o the VSS wire hooked up this unit is dead on with directions. There is a place where you can check how the unit learns your car as you drive it with left turns, right turn and speed. The more you use the NAV the better it learns how the car drives w/o the VSS wire hooked up.

I was watching Borat on the way to work today and almost wrecked my car because I was laughing so hard. Now I see why the DVD function is disabled by default on these units. :)

I give this unit a lot of props, its the best bang for the buck out there.

All AVIC series have this function.

sorry Frogman, Im new this this AVIC/NAV/DVD stuff. This is the first car I have put a nice stereo sytem into, so its kinda exciting to me. Ive always been into gutting interiors and running 30+PSI TT motors, but since I cant do that to my family car, I can only upgrade minor things. :)

No worries. I guess some people like myself merely yawn at those features since we've seen them in just about every AVIC series by Pioneer since the N1.

I really didn't like the D3 I had put into my 98. The screen is a bit dim, (even turned all the way up), and the lack of a fulltime ability to play disc media and navigate long distances at the same time (a'la 2nd slot for Map DVD or hard disk) didn't impress me much. Yes, I know it has 64megs of RAM you can load a route into, or an area, but it's not full time detailed navigation. I do have to give the D3 props for the UI. It's a hell of a lot faster than even a D2.

This is the first Pioneer NAV/DVD unit Ive ever seen in person and its impressive to me. I bought a D2 from a vendor a week before I got this D3 and thank God that fell through.

Im not really concerned about the NAV, its the DVD functionality that I like the best so far. Will keep my daughter quiet on longer trips, haha.

So is there any advantage to locating the VSS wire, and connecting it? Any error messages or anything without it connected?

I havent found a need to hook it up yet. No errors and the NAV is right on with location and directions.

Just placed my order with Crutchfield , Navtraffic unit, Steering Wheel Adapter harness, and Pioneer Bluetooth module. They also currently are including a $250 backup camera, (which will promptly go on Ebay

Now I need to order the faceplate.

Your cutting of your faceplate appears extremely neat/clean. Im assuming you had to cut material from all 4 surfaces/angles. I have a Dremel, but wonder how to keep the cuts as straight as possible, like you did.

Once you get the bezel you will see, all the cutting is done onthe back side of the bezel, you will not go near the front side of it. The dremel is the easiest way of doing this. I had to make relief cuts in the bezel where the face goes through because the unit is a little tall to fit completely through. The back of the bezel is hacked, the front in untouched.
