I've been lurking here for a couple of months and in that time you guys (and gals) have helped me:
R&R the coils / plugs / valve cover gaskets (no easy job)
R&R the clock switch (found through air bag warning light threads)
Both jobs went successfully and fixed the problems thanks to the helpful threads and pictures posted. Couldn't have known what the problems were and pulled off the fix without you folks.
Have a virtual round on me with my thanks. I'll be sure to post any tricks or fixes I find, but I suspect I'll remain the student for awhile.
