So I have a 2000 V8 LS....By the way I've had it for 2 years and I LOVE it! It is SO much fun!!
BUT I am scared to death!! The last couple months when I accelerate (sometimes, not all the time) when I get just past 40 mph I can feel it in the foot pedal it will kinda jerk and the car will sputter like 3 times???
This may not make sense to any of you as you can see I'm not mechanically inclined and I haven't told the hubby about this yet, because that was one reason he was scared to get an LS cause if anything happened to it he said it would be a nightmare to fix????

So has anyone heard of this?? Is it the transmission??? What are your thoughts?

minus the foot pedal jerk statement. It would sounds like the coils to me. I had this problem but it didn't throw a CEL so I had to take it to the dealership to have them put it on the computer to tell me which coil was bad.
 
Sounds like the infamous coil problem. The LS engine uses a "Coil on Plug" or COP ignition system, and the coils are known to fail after a certain mileage. Your description of the hesitation is the first symptom of that failure.

The fix is to replace the coil units (one per cylinder). Its not hard, but can get expensive because you have to pay for 8 coils, plus labor. Others may know better, but I recall prices to fix this problem ranging from $600 to $800.
 
I believe the dealership wants $1,200 -$1,400 in labour and another $600 - $800 in parts.

It is a very difficult repair to do own your own unless you have the patience and tools.
 
thanks for the response! So at least, you all don't think it's the transmission??? That is good! i was afraid if it was that I may have to kiss the LS good bye! That would be a sad day for me!!!

I hope you are not geting to scared:) I think the quotes you are seeing are about "worst case". Don't buy the coils thro the dealer, and you should be able to get the coil price down to the 45-70 range, depends how good you go. My local dealer gave me a price of 125.00+tax for instulation. Whatever happens, it's good to see you doing research, and not just taking the dealers word for it.

this is only for replacing the coils. If the valve cover gasket is leaking (which is one of the main reasons for the coils to need replacing) then it becomes the 'big' job.
 
For a 2000? I'd purchase the coil packs from the poster known as pantysniffer for $200 or so for the set of 8. Take the car to the dealer and have them replace the gaskets, the coils, and the plugs. That will resolve your issue.
 
hey luvmyls, how many miles are on your car? i got the same car and when i try to accelerate slowly from around 40, say to pass someone, it seems like its slipping or something i'm not really sure. the rpms stay the same but it just kinda hiccups during the acceleration. i don't feel anything in the gas pedal. does this relate at all to yours?

Yes that sounds just like mine! It may be my imagination about the vibration in the gas pedal?? It's kinda embarrassing trying to pass someone in the LS and the car don't want to get up and go! (my LS has 113,000 miles on it! :mad: )
Told my hubby about he coil thing and he thought that made sense and was glad to hear it wasn't the transmission but he didn't think it was cause the rpms stay steady when accelerating.. He wondered if it could be something in the shift module???
 
Other possible culprit is a transmission solenoid module. Several here have had them fail
 
humm i think i have had the same problem recently... Is their a test that can be done at the dealership prior to replaceing them to make sure thats the problem? also if they are bad do they need to be replaced right away?
 
luvmyls u should disconnect the battery for like 30 mins and reconnect it, i did that and its like the car runs way better i accelerate from 40mph plus without dropping a gear and the rpms just go up a little and it operates great perfect
