here is the link to a video i recorded myself of exactly what it does. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHhUREGcLwk
it sounds pretty bad, has anyone else s motor gone bad or made this sound? if the motor actually going bad or can it be greased or something? it only makes the sound while going inward but not outward.

Grease it really well. It's not the telescoping motor/gears that are making the sound, it's the tilt motor assembly. (Yes, I know it doesn't make the noise while tilting the wheel.) There's a square rod that slides back and forth through a gear that rotates when the tilt goes up and down. However, this rod slides in and out as the wheel telescopes in and out. The noise you hear is where this rod is sliding in and out.
Move the wheel in and out and up and down while you look up under the dash. You'll see the moving parts that you need to grease.

yeah i didn't think it was actually the motor itself, because if i listen the hum of the motor sounds fine and it does sound like its just rubbing somewhere.

is that where it needs greased where the end of the screwdriver is? it feels like more vibration is coming from the top part of the wheel but i cant access it without un-doing those plastic clips and i dont quite know how.

See drawing below. Note the item 7, the tilt motor. At the top of the motor, there is an offset round spot shown. Not shown is the square rod that sticks through it. This square rod is what you need to lubricate. You can see it and get to it without removing any trim or covers. If you use the telescope control while looking at it, you will see the rod poke out when the wheel is fully retraced, and go back in when it is extended.

i don't know if its different in later models or something but i don't know what you're talking about. i have a 2000. i don't see any kind of square rod sticking out of anything anywhere. im not really able to follow drawings like this either. if you can just point out where it is in either of the following photos that would help. but it really really feels like its coming from the top left somewhere. almost like the threaded screw that moves it in and out is whats making the sound. Both gens are the same. You're not looking in the right place. Put all those covers back on and everything back together.
Move the driver's seat all the way back.
Lay down of the floor of the car on the driver's side on your back. Your legs will be sticking out the open driver's door opening.
Push your head against the brake pedal and look up. At the end of the steering column you will see the parts that I am talking about and the drawing shows.

not at all, if i look above the brake pedal its just a big black cover that covers everything in that area. there is nothing to look at.

this is my view looking up with my head down by the pedal IMG_1151[1].jpg

Remove the black under dash cover that your gen I has, and you should be able to see what I am talking about. The gen II dropped that cover.

ok yeah i see it its clear as day now.. of course just a damn cover changes everything haha. thanks for the help ill let you know if this fixes my problem.

ok that totally fixed it. had to scotch brite it some and i just oiled it. probably temporary though ill get some actual grease for it soon. you were a big help.

There's a for-sale section, and there's a Lincoln Mark section. This is neither of those, and this is a thread that is not remotely about selling a car that you are trying the hijack.
