Taking the Ls to the track for the 1st time

I hear ya. Scared to brake something so far away from home. I just want to go one more time to see what my new times would be after adding some more power and traction. One of my coworkers just got a trailer for his M3 which I may bring just in case the transmission doesn't like the new tires:p.

What did the SRT8 pull for a time?

I wasn't really scared to break anything. Hell, I busted a headgasket/lifted a head in my 87 LSC down at Atlanta Dragway and drove the thing home 750 miles. The car still went 12.87 on street tires when I blew it. lol

The SRT8 with just the K&N and some muffler deletes went 13.0 @ 109 with about 12k miles on the car. Never ran it after the 180 thermostat, dyno tune and full exhaust. Just going by the RWHP gain from the dyno tune (about 30), obviously the car would have been in the 12s had I bothered to remove the heavy 22s it was rolling on. :)

Should be enough to show you that the statment you made "anybody that doesn't think drag racing is any fun, has never driven a real car" is FALSE.
so you used to have a car that would lift the front tires and keep them up every time you would drive it down the strip, but you don't enjoy going to the strip at all because it is so boring? interesting.

i really cant believe we made it to the second page before somebody said this! lol

BTW while we are on the F&Fsubject, i know these movies try to be as realistic as possible, but i have a hard time believing that a pair of SRT8's could be able to pull a bank safe down the road, let alone yank it out of a wall! (yes, i did watch F5 last night, but in my defense it was either that or old reruns of NCIS and Criminal Minds! lol)

I didn't realize OP was from the Bay Area. I think I ran his LS yesterday at the track in my GTO, what a small world. DA on that run was 1080 ft with a nasty 25-30mph headwind. I spun off the line and ran a 13.12 at 105.92mph to his 14.93 at 90.84mph. Best run of the night for me was a 12.92 at 107.38 MPH.

YOU OWE ME A 10 SECOND CAR! zOMGwtfBBQ!?!?!?!?!?

I used to drag race back in HS but admit that I find the twisty stuff more engaging. Plus, unless you are pushing 400+ HP there isn't really much to do with drag racing. About any car with will go down the track without issue. Biggest thing you are learning is shift points, reaction time, and maybe launch control.

Not saying there isn't a lot to drag racing, but there certainly isn't much to it with a 300-HP 4500-LB well balanced car like the LS.

this i can agree with fully

actual weight is 3692 with full tank of gas and spare tire/jack (not including driver weight). If you weighed 4500lbs you just lost about .8 seconds on a stock LS.

all the points described are applicable with lower power cars, just less room for error with a faster car.

I'm guessing I have about 380-390 hp at the engine. Its plenty of fun and if you don't drive it right, your time will suck. If nothing else, its a chance to go fast where its legal and safe to do so.

Had alot of fun at the track!! I ran about 5-6 times only lost twice once to a GTO that did 13.1...my best time was 14.8 at 93mph which was my last run super windy out there

Nice job. Respectable time. That GTO you lost to was 98LSC32V on these forums. He realized it was you when he went back online after racing. He posted above.

Go run one down the track and see if you still think the same. :shifty:

I have. Hardest part is launch control and shift points with the SST. If it had a locking or even posi diff it would launch much better. If the SST didn't lag by about half a second it would be more consistent too.

Sorry, but the LS just doesn't have enough power or set-up right to really do anything squirrely short of driver error or something like oil/water on the track. Not to say it's not good, but it's just not set-up to be a muscle car. Just my opinion on the subject.

I think the LS is a good car to learn drag racing basics because of what it is though. Enough power to make you learn how to race, but docile enough that you can easily recover when you do something stupid.

Such is my opinion. To each their own :)

So more like 4100 pounds then. But yeah, the fastest way to drop ET's on my car is change drivers. LOL :)
