Wish me luck guys. I'm taking my 2000 v6 with 96k into town motors in Nj for service tomorrow. She's had a misfire for a few months now, and it would go away if I filled the tank, but now its unbearable and It needs to get fixed. My dad has been a customer there for 10 years and he said that he could get a good deal, but these guys charged me 1500 dollars last time to fix 2 coils and a fuel injector....we shall see. I was going to try and do it myself but i'm really not a mechanic and this would have been my first major project. I think while im at it i'll tell them to see if they can fix my clunk in the suspension and change the fuel filter. Ill keep you guys updated.
 
Check the tech articles. they have a how to for coils. Im no mechanic either yet i do every repair possible, One rule of thumb is , it goes back on the way it came off. Just be very organized and confident. If you get frustrated take a break. coils are a very easy change. give it a shot and save some money. YOU CAN DO IT:)
 
I think I got the #2 coil replaced for around 100-125 bucks.
 
So the verdict is they want $900 to fix 3 coils. I went in there and basically told them to go f*** themselves. Now I really hope I can pull the job off and I dont have to go crawling back to them to fix it. Thanks for the moral support, I hope that I can get the job done. So Im gonna order the coils tonight or tomorrow,u guys got tips on coi replacement on a v6?
 
.....right , but do I need a manifold gasket and do I need anything for when I put the new coils and plugs in? Sorry if this is redundant....
 
wow...900 to replace 3 coils??? from what i hear its harder to change them on the v6, but i cant imagine its that much more difficult.

you dont have to replace the gasket. i imagine some people might just because theyre working in there anyway.
 
I worked at Town motors for 2 weeks during my transition, but I was on the Audi side.

It's a much bigger job on a V6 due to the intake being draped over the right side of the engine. Here is everything that must be removed to do the job.

by the way, have new plugs put in and make sure that you get all of the coils on the right side replaced.. Considering that you have probably just one bad coil, you will now have 2 good used spares, and they will be able to replace the left side of the engine's original coils, which would be your most likely next coil problems.

Get a new PCV valve and hose put on while it is apart, since that stuff lives under the intake and fuel injector assembly. You should get close to another 100K miles out of it without taking that side apart again.

thanks for the advice guys. It really is kind of urgent and has messed me up for the past week driving around and the car misfiring like that. Nick, I might check out that guy up in Ramsey, what do you think his quote might be for all that under manifold stuff (plugs Ignition coils PCV valve ) And what did you think about Town motors? Personally I have my hang ups with them, one of them being that I took my car in last year with a "hook up" I refrained from asking how much it was gonna cost because I had a deal worked out with the owner, like a family friend type deal (not to mention I am the 3rd generation bringing my car there) ... I get the car back two days later and a bill for $1500 for 1 ignition coil and 1 fuel injection. I thought that 40 years in the family with this company would get be a better deal than a dick in the ass. But I guess not.... Sorry im just venting....this misfire has gotten to me. But yeah, disregard all that sass mouthing of Town Motors.... Its a real good place to take your car If you have the money. Unfortunataly I'm 21 and not exactly a fat white man yet. I cant afford $900 to get my lincoln fixed or buy a porsche. So im a little disgruntled. I'm still mixed up on whether I should let them do it or try it myself. I'll pick up the car tomorrow most likely and try the project over the weekend, If I F it up , I can always roll up on a flat bed to Town Motors with my head in hands. To be continued...
 
Plugs are $30 a set. PCV valve and hose are $35. I got coils at autozone for $40 each. Their system comes up with the wrong part numbers, though, so if you try this, and you want to get those coils, I can give you the numbers. It is a large enough job that you should have some comfort level with a lot of aspects of auto service to dive into this. You would want to have tools, know-how about how the ford connectors work, so that you can successfully get them apart, and plenty of time and documentation. The old intake gaskets will set you back an hour or so getting cleaned up, because they will be all flakey with carbon build-up. Use spray intake cleaner or similar. Stay away from brake cleaner, it is probably too strong on the gaskets, not to mention your hands. Use blue or purple nitrile gloves, they stand up to the solvents pretty well and leave your hands pretty clean after almost any job.

One point of advice: if you pay someone else to do this, you are looking at a 4-8 hour job, depending on problems encountered.

The metal brace for the firewall to each fender that hides under the cowling that the wipers come out of, tends to twist off the bolts, so be prepared to drill out bolts and possibly tap new holes for new bolts.
 
I think its a good idea to do the work your self, I would only take my car if it was some thing major other wise i figure it out on my own and do my own work
 
Town motors seemed like a respectible place, more so on the Lincoln side because the most of employees on that side have been with then a while, not a high turn over, they are like any dealer, they are a business and want to make profits. So dealer cost is high.

As for orice my buddie would charge, I cant speak for him, but give him a call, like I said, he is fair and does not charge as much as a dealer. The guy he has working for him Angel) (you can see his quilifications on the website) is excellent in diagnostic of all makes/models.

So picked the car up on Friday night..Yay no more misfire....do a little stunting around town. Then, out of nowhere .... CEL!!!! ahhhh.....take her back to the dealer today...they say I got a blown catalytic converter.... and they want 1500 to replace it..... oy vey! I got a factory repair manual shipped to me last week and the replacement seems do-able , yet the pictures in the manual are really vague. I think its a clamp/ bolt on....no welding. Is there any welding incolved in replacing a cat? and if I dont get it fixed is there any damage to the car that will happen , and lastly, can I get the CEL light turned off without replacing the Cat.... Any replies are appreciated.

take it to a muffler shop, they will not charge you nearly as much. it might be more difficult locating a catalytic converter for your LS though
