Hi all put in a new motor due to my stock sunroof on my Mark 1 I have to help it or it rrrrraaaattttt tttttaaaatttttt tttttaaaaattttt. It stops a couple inches short

or does anyone know the fix? or is this something I will have to take it to the dealer for?

There are some adjustments you can make to it, but it's a real pain and mostly trial and error. On the motor assembly, that is a wheel with some little nubins on it that will trigger some contact switches. This is how the motor is switched on and off. You can manual turn that wheel. It clicks when you do but turn it, try it, turn it, some more, try it again, so on and so on until it is back to normal.

If it sounds like it's binding, then it might be the cable assemblies that drive it, those would have to be replaced. Just make sure that when it closes the glass raises up to seal correctly. It make look like it's closed but the glass needs to raise up about 1/4 to 1/2 inch to seal correctly.

I was told there are some kind of gray colored marks on the motor gear wheel and on the track the wheel goes into. You have to align them so they mate up gray to gray. I was also told to move the sunroof to the last position which is where the back of the sun roof glass is up in the air then turn the gear motor wheel by hand to get the gray mark in the right position. You do know there is a hole in the motor that a hex screw drive fits into in order to move sunroof manually? Hope this helps.

Gen I or II? It has been a few years but on my Gen II I opened the access panel in the headliner - removed the 3 bolts holding the motor - now there is a little plastic window on the motor - there is a notch on each gear. I used a stick to press the motor switch till I could get them lined back up. Added a touch of blue Loctite to the threads to the three screws and poof done. Try a search I posted a more detailed thread once upon a time for this.

cool thanks guys I will try all the above when it warms up 60 outside today brrrrr

has anyone ever taken the headliner out of a gen 1? and worked on sunroof

Yes, I have and it's no fun, I actually tore the fabric when doing so, I'll have to have it recovered now. You have to remove all the interior panel in the back of the car to get it out right.

From the manual...

If the motor is not synchronized, adjust it as follows:

a. Connect battery ground cable.

b. Connect motor wiring connector to moon roof wiring connector.

c. Operate control switch to advance motor drive gear until notch in cam and microswitch are aligned.

d. Disconnect motor wiring connector from moon roof wiring connector.

e. From the retracted position, crank glass panel assembly flush with roof panel.

6. To time moon roof, align yellow paint line on the splined motor shaft with the yellow paint mark on motor gear cover plate next to it. When these marks are in alignment, the moon roof and the motor are both synchronized.

7. Install motor onto splined motor gear driveshaft.

8. Install motor retaining screws.

9. Install motor cover.
