If its a stock sunroof on a Gen 1 the pullers and pushers are a threaded cable that goes on each side of the motor gear, it may have skipped a thread if unbalanced on the push or the pull. If you can get it open (you may have to have help guiding the one side down so it goes back) you can also drop the motor and operated it by vice grips. There are probably 6 screws that hold each side down, on each side there is a movable piece that triggers the lift, if you can get it open check that one of the sides did not come loose. I have pulled the whole darn thing and reset my cables, and once even gave up and bought a used one from someone on hear and changed the whole thing.
