Okay. Didnt really know what to name this.. But Im putting 2 12'' s in the trunk.. I was wanting to know.. Is it possible to take out the plastic piece in back of the cup holder that flips down.. and cut the seat backing to basically have a hole when you flip down the Armrest / cup holder?? So Air could flow and sound. Instead of having the small seat back down all the time so i can actually hear my subs??

I was going to do this on my install, but I came to find out you will have to cut through a thick plastic backplate along with miscellaneous thin steel bracing that is part of the back of the seat.

As an alternative to hacking away @ the seat, Just remove the stock 6x9s in the rear deck and those will act as blow-throughs into the cabin.

Well my sport model never came with the 6x9's in the back. It just has foam fill ins and then the hat rack (Piece between the Rear glass and seat where the 6x9's should be located )..

Im wondering if anyone has actually done this mod

Really? There is no cut outs at all? I thought at least every LS had the same decklid, just either had speakers in it or not.

Mine has just door speakers. But there IS cut outs for the rear 6x9's.. just it has foam in the inserts and then the deck.

Apparently my Box is going to be 14.5 Inch in Height and like 31 Inches in width. So thatll put the box about mid ways in my trunk and leave a good 6-10 inches or so from the back of the box to the seat backs.. Where I would Mount the amp is the back of the box.. and I think it would be a god thing if that cup holder / arm rest backing piece wasnt there so sound and air could move through.. ALOT better looking then the passenger side rear seat being down.. and that way i could carry 4 people in my car at once and have good sound quality..

of course you could always cut out the back part of the armrest, finding some thing to use a trim to cover the place where you cut is the tricky part.

ive done this on a different car for a friend, and built a box that had a port that lined up perfectly for it.

but as a much better solution

1st, the square area of the sub cutouts is much larger than the section of the armrest. more area, more flow, more sound.

2nd, it will be much easier to make look good than the armrest.

3rd, if your building your own box, you can always make the ports directly under the sub cutouts.


my subs are facing up under the factory cutouts, since they are facing right at the way out, there is very little pressure in the rest of the trunk, making everything much less likely to rattle, and there is very little difference in sound levels with the seats up or down.

FYI, on my 2000 ls, those foam inserts easily pulled out. There is a layer of hardboard that the rear shelf is comprised of, and wrapped in carpet. I wanted to cut those areas out, and install 6x9 grilles over the top, but decided against it.

since i removed the factory subs for my car, there was already a nice mesh factory grill there so it looked great, this would be the perfect thing to find in a junk yard for a project like this (the entire rear decklid)

if the subs are in a sealed box that is or within tollerance of the cubic feet it needs to operate correctly, you don't want to port it. Subs are designed to work in very specific enviroments. check the sub specs to see if they will still operate correctly in a ported box the size you ordered.

95% of the time, you want the subs facing the back of the car, most of the time if you have them facing forward you will get a lot of cancellation and it wont nearly be as loud. for my case, my box has been sealed away from the trunk area (with a layer of sheet metal and a few layers of dynamat) so the sub box is actually part of the front cabin and not part of the trunk. because of this when you open the trunk, you really cant hear any more of the base than if you where standing outside the car with the doors closed.

it is much better to have the speakers facing out into the trunk than towards the seat. If they face the seat (assuming they would be right up against it) what will happen is most of the sound waves will bounce back and right into them selves working against themself.

Just like you wouls never want to subs to face each other, the sound waves will almost cancel each other out.

Can you post a pic of what your enclosure looks like, or do you already have pics posted? I would like to see your set-up it sounds like a great way to do it.

yea we have looked into hugesnet and directway, but for how much it cost, its just not worth it, especially since you cant game on it because of how long it takes the signal to travel in to and back from space THEN go through the regular internet. just one of the prices you have to pay to not have any neighbors i guess.

yeah I want to live in a somewhat rural area but not so far of the beaten path I drive an hour just to go to the store. like 20 minutes from the city

I don't want to be able to knock on my neighbors door from my front porch, but on the same note I don't what to have to drive 5 miles either.

well ive got three houses that i can see, one of them is fairly close (but luckly they are just as roudy as we are) but we are dead smack in the middle of three towns, where you can drive 15 mins to get either gas or grocery, but you have to drive 30-50 mins to get to any real kind of stores.

I live about 6 miles out of a small town (around 10,000 people). I like being just far enough out. It's also on a dead end road, so not a lot of traffic, safe for my kids to play outside, and I can walk outside and piss off my deck if I want to.
