I dont know how i would modify the hood yet, either cut a hole in it right behind the grill and let air feed into the filter from the top or..i dont know how else it could be done, or if its even possible to build a Air filter box with a low enough profile to fit under the hood or what. im going to look into it more. anyways...
obviously my drawing is a bit off.

IF you have something youd like to say, or maybe a better way of doing it im all for it. i cant really figure out clearance between the hood and radiator shroud, but i think it would be neat. only problem is cutting the hood.

id also like to know if theres any cars with air box's that are pretty thin. or filters that are pretty thin. it would be stupid to have an inch between the air filter and back of the air filter box, wouldnt do all that much. anything low profile or whatever.
 
Maybe the 4th gen Firebird/Camaros? I know they have the SLP lids or whatever they're called. Maybe look into those?
 
I don't think its worth any bit of time cutting up the hood like that to be honest.
 
either that or i start cutting sheet metal lol. i think sheet metal could work, i stuck the top of the stock air box upside down on the radiator shroud. when i went to shut the hood it actually got to the secondary latch (the one it pops up to when u pull the hood release) so there is actually quite a bit more room in there then i thought. i dont know why lincoln went with a such a "smashed" oval intake tube.


heres what the box would look like. obviously the maf would connect to it somehow.

What's under the hood now? I see a coupler where the last elbow should be (the first turn after the TB) and a separate tube going towards the firewall, then connected to...... is that what I think it is?
 
thats the LS engine bay that had an electric turbo charger


thats basically what it might look like. if nothing else it would deffinetly help cool down the engine on the highway too? i dunno how rain would do tho haha

infinty g35 has a similar setup to what you want to do.... no need to cut the hood. The air will get over the radiator and into that section pretty well. If you are serious, I will dick around with the intake I blew up and see what I can come up with. Seems easy enough to cut a rectangular hole in the intake and just add some sort of thin box to direct air into that slit. But you can do this without hacking up the sexiness in simplicity that is the LS hood
 
im not sure if the air will get up and over, the LS has some weather striping that would need to be taken out. the only reason id like to put a hole there is basically because it gets pretty hot between the radiator and the engine. im not sure if the air would just be extremly hot or if it would be cool.

I might dick around and get some sheet metal and see what can be done aswell lol.

and to be the first person with a ram air (type) air intake on a LS v8? YES im serious! lets face it, the front of the car gets cooler air, and more air, then the side of the car where the stock filter housing is, and it would probably better then the aluminum intake tube with a cone filter on the end.

Why do you have 2 power steering reservoirs?
 
one is actually the hydraul fan resevoir, the one on the passenger side. drivers side one is the powersteering.

anyways ive figured out a way to do this and for cheap!

basically out of sheet metal build a chamber in the middle of the engine bay where the ram air box would be. kind of like the block off plate for 00-02 LS v8's with the aluminum intake tube and cone filter. do this in the middle of the engine bay though blocked off on the bottom and both sides. weather sripping to seal it when the hood it shut. cut the weather stripping out from the hood where it would block the filter.

then put the cone filter inside the chamber, attach the MAF, attach the IAT sensor, finish the tubing to the throttle body and connect the other vaccum line, remove the breather hose and put a filter on. and that should work!

right?

Why didn't anyone know about that electric turbo?
 
no that wasnt my engine bay picture. the article is online somewhere. basically it was to expensive, and they stopped making the turbo, the article is literally like..5-6 years old


basically this... and with a cone filter i wont have to worry about having enough space between the filter and the back of the intake housing...

Anyway I just don't think its going to work. To be honest,... I would imagine it was a idea that most LS owners looking to upgrade the intake have thought about.


Good luck though, it would be cool to see something new.

haha j/k man, yea i know the IAT sensor isnt there, but that things so easy to deal with. and the other hose is gone on my car, i got rid of it just run a breather filter now
 
Have you checked the NACA duct that Quik used before he finished the blower? You might be able to do something along that line. I've been thinking about doing something like that for use with an intercooler. Not only improving efficiency, but creating a 'catcher' for swarf if a compressor comes apart.

I've been contemplating that one myself actually. Kleen did a PS of one, but there is a universal kit somewhere that looks like it would install a bit neater than Kleens PS. I know there are a bunch of mustang ones, maybe one would work with our cars.... idk just a thought. where I plan on going turbo, it would just be a cosmetic thing for me and I don't think i want to take away from the clean simplicity that defines the LS

Good find! I never read that article but,... notice how everything ( all the add ons minus the turbo ) was gassed up from what tons of members here have been doing? That car does look really f*cking good! But all it is is a LSE with tinted tails ( how many have done it? ) and a mesh grille over lay/center piece replacement ( how many have done that? )!

I was also thinking about something on the lines of what quick did. I'm just not seeing your position working out at all.
 
His is off to the drivers side of the hood somewhere.

If you add it where you are thinking I am really think it would just get hot air from the radiator or it will just be a small filter do to the space you have to work with.


If you could get that diagram to work that would be great but if not just keep in mind that you need a fair amount of surface space,.. right?


If you do it like quick,... I would get more creative and add something to the right side also for some extraction purpose and symmetry.
