2000 lincoln ls stuck in park what to do...i did a search and my tail lights work, checked all fuses, and the only way to move the car is turn the key to the off position and start in neutral...the dealer tells me 100 bucks a hour ..can someone tell me what i need before i go to the dealer? And the only other question i have is, If i step on the brake pedal without the key in the ignition the brake lights wont work, i actally have to turn the key then the brake lights work, is that how the Ls works or do i need a brake switch?

Neutral Safety Switch or maybe the brake light switch - you have to press the brake petal to get the gear selector to move so that is my first choice. My 00 stang had this when parking on hills. The slight roll foward after putting in gear and letting off the brake was enought to screw the pooch and not let the gear lever get out out of park.

Brake lights should work with the ignition off. The problem you are having is likely related. The car wont come out of park unless your foot is on the brake pedal, and if the brake light switch dows not work properly... well you get the picture.

I had a friend who used to own a jag s-type that had that same recurring problem, turned out to be something with the computer, he actually wound up giving the car back after the 3rd time it happened. gl.

in order for my break lights to come on the key has to be in the ignition so maybe it could be a break light switch.

I had this happen to me on My previous car (MarkVIII) I had an automatic starter put in the car, and it ended up being part of that, if you have an automatic starter, you may want to check that.

I still don't think the main question has been addressed here. Can you or can you not move the shifter from the Park position?
If you can move the shifter and are then able to move the car, then the vehicle is not "stuck" in park.

What I'm faintly picking up is that the engine will not turn over when the shifter is in park, but it will when the shifter is placed in neutral. Correct?

Ok the engine turns over in park or neutral, But if i start the car in the park position, The shifter button will not depress so i can put it in the drive..The only way i can drive is when i start the car in neutral the it allows me to drop it in the drive position..but like i stated earlier i noticed my brake lights dont work unless i turn the ignition key...so if i open the door and step on the brakes nothing, but if the key is turned the i got brake lights..and now the dealer pushes my date back more..so all the info on this would be greatly appreciated from you guys...oh and i dont have a auto start.

Ok that clears thing up. The brake lights should work without the key.
There are two inputs to the shifter lock. One is the brake light switch the other is the ignition switch. You have to have both inputs to be able to get it out of gear. You can put it in neutral before the key is turned to start the engine. But you can't once the key is released after starting it (in park).

Just the fact that the brake lights work, I think can rule out the brake light switch. The brake light switch is a very simple component, it pretty much either works or it doesn't.

That leaves the ignition switch. You could try wiggling the key side to side once the engine is running and see if that makes any difference. Maybe the contacts inside the switch are dirty and are not making a good connection.

Theres also the possibility that the lock mechanism in the shifter assembly is messed up. You can check that out on your own fairly easily. Just pop the top off of the center console and take out the 4 hex head screws that hold the shifter to the floor. There are a few wires that might need to be disconnected, and the shift cable.
