This is so hard to describe I'm thinking about taking a trip down toward galveston to have tommy actually listen to the car, but I'll describe it as best I can.

When I hit the gas I hear a rattle. Like, if I'm taking off from a light there is a rattle for about 1 second, or if I'm going 40 mph and hit the gas there is a rattle (1/2 second). When I say, I "hit the gas" I mean I give the engine a little more than a gradual increase of gas, but not necessarily stomping on the gas peddle. The sound doesn't happen If I am soft footed on the gas peddle.

The reason this worries me is that there appears to be a loss of power. Sometimes a very large loss of power. Engine still revs but the car struggles to go anywhere so my suspicion is the transmission. There is a significant loss of power when going around turns. I know about the tranmission fluid issue in these situations but it appears to be a bit worse.

The history of the tranmission goes like this: I had a shuddering problem when I bought the car. I dropped the pan and put in a new filter and new mercon 5. BUT I didn't drain the torque converter. I planned on getting back to dropping the pan again after a couple hundred miles so that in averages I had changed out 75% of the the transmission fluid. ( or less/more depending on how much of the fluid is kept in the torque converter). So I'm thinking I need to get around to doing this. That's my theory anyway.

You guys think I'm right in my theory or does someone have another idea of what this could be.

(suspension is always a culprit but I've changed the entire front suspension out now excluding the inner tie rod ends.) (very happy with the car handling now with new tires/alignment an all. ... ;) anyone have any tokiko's they need to get rid of? )

Sounds like a bad catalytic converter to me. They break, rattle, and clog the exhaust. That would explain the loss of power.

Listen near the cat when someone gives the car some throttle. If the cat is cold put your hand on it, you may feel the peices rattle. You can also diagnose a bad cat with a vacuum gage.

Hmm.. hadn't even thought of the cats. The car passed inspection not too long ago, but it is low and I nearly highcentered the car coming out of a parking lot a couple months ago.

In my last mark I gutted the front cats and it didn't make any effects on the emissions testing. Anyone have their cats gutton on a gen2?

are you running rich? I remember I worked on a crown vic that was a cabbie car and it ratttled and it was rich.

Mine does it.... all the time, stock tune, my tune, tune with dead nuts flat timing... catalytic converter...

Never had a tune done. Don't have the money. Cats are expensive as hell. I need to get under there and check it out. Will it pass inspection with the front 2 cats gutted?

Hell no it wont. And yes it sounds like a cat issue. I will trade both my stock cats for a set of Kooks headers.:D we dont have inspection here.

The rattle doesn't hurt anything. It's those rattling chunks that plug things up downstream in the exhaust.:)

Does the exhaust smell like rotten eggs or a carbon type smell?
