Stock Alarm/ Break in

Ok so I have a 02 LS V8. Last weekend I was at a bar in downtown St.Louis. I locked the car and the car has 5% tint so you cant see in easily. Well I came out from the bar and remote started it and as my friends got in the asked why everything was open. (glove box and center console) At first I wasn't sure if anything was missing, then I realized I had put my 300 coat on the driver seat before going in, and like a dumb-ass I left the GPS in the window. Ok at this point I am pretty pissed, but I hadn't noticed anything wrong with the car. I thought that they might have gotten in through the back passenger door because the lock has been acting up. Turns out they wedged a screwdriver or something between the door skin and the handle on my door. Now the handle casing around the lock is coming off and there is a hole below the handle.

My question is this. What does it take to set off a stock alarm? Never heard it (bar was pretty close) and no one said anything about it going off, nor did the car give me indication anything was wrong). Weird part is the lock is still intact, lock still works, handle kind of still works, none of it seems to be busted like I would imagine.

As you can imagine I am pissed because now I need a new door, and I'm cold without my damn coat!
 
I feel your pain, Chief. Last September, my 2006 was broken into (pics will be coming), and they did about $7300 (yes, you read that correctly) worth of damage to her. They pried back the driver's B-Pillar, shattered the front window, snapped off the dash kit bezel, took my Pioneer F90BT and all corresponding harnesses, and my 120 Gb ipod that was in the glove compartment. I had a couple Blu-Ray movies in my console that I bought for my kids - they grabbed those. All compartments were open and gone through.

They did this in the span of 25 minutes. They knew what they were doing. They didn't cut any of the factory harnesses or mess up the other bezels around it. Although they marred up the dash pad pretty good around the nav bezel trying to snap it off (which for the record, kiddies, a gen II dash pad runs $4300 from the factory).

I had locked my car, but did it from the key fob, and only hit the lock button once. So the factory alarm was never armed. According to 1LoudLS, you either have to hit the lock button from the inside door panel as you're getting out or keep hitting the button on the key fob until the horn sounds for the alarm to be set. I don't know that it would have made much difference with my situation. It probably saved them one step and a little bit of panic. I think they still would have pulled off the job.

Sorry for your loss, but it definitely could have been worse (speaking from experience).

WOW sorry to hear that. It just pisses me off knowing there are people out there like that.
I am about to put in a touch screen and had to hold off a month or so and boy am I happy I did. Luckily I didn't have much in the car that was expensive. I am more mad about the damage to the car, but like you said it could have been worse.

99% of the time I hit the key-fob until the horn sounds. Now I might have not this time, but like I said I almost always do. Maybe that door in the back not locking and unlocking right had something to do with it?

Well I hope you got your LS back and on the road. I am thinking about at the very least getting one of those big bright blue light-up Viper alarm decals to help deter thieves because the little red light on the dash isn't cutting it I guess.
 
Yep, everything is back together and better than what I ran before. I'll be posting a thread with the pics of before and after soon.

I agree with you on needing to do some extra stuff to help deter the risk of theft. I was thinking about getting one of those fake generic radio covers to stick over the top of the nav - so any prospective thieves would think it's a cheap factory stereo at an initial glance. It may not be enough, though. I'm wondering if I need to step up to an aftermarket alarm.

Same exact thing happened to me. The thief broke in the same exact way too. And I've been wondering the same thing about the alarm because it never went off, and I would have heard it as it was parked right in front of my friends house.

Went outside and found all the windows, including sunroof open. And a dent/hole between the door and the lock. Luckily they only took my house keys, who knows why.\

The first push of the lock button locks the car and engages the alarm. The second push just confirms that the alarm is set and all entry points are closed. A double beep means a door, the hood or trunk are not fully closed. Opening the door without disabling the alarm will cause the horn to honk. To test this just get in the car and lock the doors with the remote. Now open a door and see what happens.
 
Yea I've been a victim also back in 2008. Some lil punk broke into my car a stole my gun.
 
as LS4me mentioned, the only way that the factory alarm will go off is if the door is opened while the alarm is set, there is no type of shock sensor like nearly all aftermarket alarms have.

also, with some fords (i didn't think that the 1st gen are included) the factory alarm will only set if the lock button on the door is pressed WHILE the drivers door is open (parking lights flash 3-5 times to show alarm was set), then when the drivers door is closed, the parking lights flash one more time to confirm that every thing is shut and secure.
 
In other words the factory alarm is a joke.

Really its only good to ensure the vehicle is locked...other than that its
not much of a theft deterrent is it.
 
I'm glad I'm in a hick area.. So, if I'm reading this right, you push the lock button until it beeps (I always have) and then it's protected?
 
^ roll the window down, lock it as you always have, wait five minutes, then try to open the door from the inside and see what happens.
 
That sucks.:( Unfortunately, your the second LS owner in the St Louis area with the same story. Thief did the samething to Itsnotmydads few years ago. Small hole under the driverside door handle. One word for the thief "Karma".
 
Ya it just sucks that factory alarms are such jokes. I will definitely look in to some more theft deterrent/ or protection.

Karma is a bitch, I just wish I could be the one dishing it out to these people...
 
So is that the weak point for break ins for LS's ? This is also the main reason I haven't bought a In-dash DD to replace my stock. Scared someone will break in just for it, that and I have my iphone4. :)
 
from what i hear, people use flatheads to do basically the same thing the car key does, roll down all the windows. which would exlain all the windows being open
 
cars are super easy to get into, and even if your alarm did go off it would be loud enough to hear inside a bar. I bought a system that has like a 400 yard range for the remote and my remote buzzes and sounds so i know if my after market alarm went off, also the car wont start if the alarm is set... thats common on most after market alarms.

And if you do catch someone getting close to the car a couple pop-offs will get em runnin real fast trust me.....

i don't :q:q:q:q around after my first car, although it was in Flint Michigan ....
 
yeah thats really unfortunate, im sorry to hear. I really hope that doesnt happen to me. But fortunately, the LS is one of the most difficult cars to steal.

yeah cause if you do get it you have to hope it doesnt break down on you
 
Does the factory pats light function/integrate with an aftermarket alarm system??
