I have a 98 mark with 196,xxx miles on it. i recently(5 weeks ago) replaced upper and lower control arms, sway end links, rack and pinion and power steering hoses. My power steering pump was replaced in this jan. i also converted to coils all around in jan.

My steering feels stiffer than it should. i have yet to lue the "rag joint"
or what ever you call it. in the event that lubing up that joint doesnt work, what else could cause stiff steering? my wheel returns slower than it should.
maybe the power steering pressure switch?

If you are experiencing binding and poor wheel returning the FSM calls for looking at:

• Improper tire pressure

• Improper tire size or different type

• Misaligned steering column or column flange rubber steering wheel and/ or flange

• Steering column gear input shaft and universal joints binding

• Check for steering column boot tears and/or evidence of binding or damage to front wheel spindle tie rods or ball joints

• Damaged /worn front suspension components

• Improper wheel alignment

• Column bearings binding

• Contamination in system

So THAT is how/why people get raped so bad when dealerships work on their car.

Just go down the list and you can almost see how the whole 2500.00 repair plays out.

First they rope you in saying "bring it in, it could just be the tire pressure"
NOPE.. but then they tell you that "oh it might be the tires". BAM 500.00
then they want to check the steering column alignment and BAM 200.00
Then thy want to replace the steering joint BAM 250.00
Then they say all your front end parts are worn out BAM 1500.00
Then they charge you for an alignment BAM 50.00
Then in the end, they tell you it was "just the fluid had water/crap in it" and charge you 50.00 more to flush and fill. BAM

..Thank you come again, would you like some of our complimentary coffee?

How much is it to replace the parts or fix the problems below?

Misaligned steering column or column flange rubber steering wheel and/ or flange

• Steering column gear input shaft and universal joints binding

Column bearings binding

Do a visual inspection of those parts.... Basically start at the steering wheel and ispect until you hit the steering rack... if everything looks ok it probably is.

When was the last time the fluid was flushed?

If it has been a while you might as well do it, and if it doesn't solve the problem it is good preventative maintenance anyways...

Two other key figures factor into the equation:
-labor cost per hour is anywhere from $10-50 higher than independent shops
-using OEM parts at list price
