I'm looking to upgrade my stereo, I had a couple of questions I haven't found answers to anywhere. I have the 12 speaker system, and want to keep the factory head unit.

Do the door speakers get full-range sound from the head unit, or are low frequencies only sent to the subs in the rear deck? Does anyone make a 6x8 plate with separate component woofer & tweeter? I've seen adapter plates that allow separates, but would prefer a one piece solution if it's available.

I don't want to give up trunk space for a boxed subwoofer. I know Kicker used to make one, but haven't found anyone that still makes a 6x9 sub. Has anyone put 8" subs in the rear deck without cutting?

I've seen comments where people have upgraded the console speakers with 3.5s, but also read somewhere that the 2003+ console speakers were smaller and 3.5s wouldn't fit. I don't use the ambience modes, is that all they are used for?

In the 2nd gen LS, the center console speakers are referred to as "center image speakers," and they have their own amp. I don't know that they actually do anything useful; in fact, the THX guys deleted them (that's the numeric difference between the 12-speaker Audiophile and 10-speaker THX systems).

The door speakers are full-range (although the feed for the factory subs is not full-range).

the gen2 center speakers and sub are run off the same amp which sits in the trunk under the rear deck. The amp must have some built in crossovers to provide the proper frequencies for the subs and centers to run off the same amp.

According to what I've found on AllData, the center channel and sub amps are separate units. They leave the head unit on separate connectors and have separate power-on leads, at any rate. This is for an '04 BTW.
