The purpose for disconnecting the battery ground is so you don’t have an accidental deployment when working with it or the wires that go to it.
So if this is what you mean by nothing happened, then that is a good thing.
With the airbag loose you will see ears on the sides that have a slot, the slot has to be out of its home.
