Stearing creaks

Since it has gotten a little colder here my stearing has started to creak when I turn the wheel (obviously). I figured it was just that cold day. But we recently had a warm up and the noise continued. It seems to be getting worse. It basically sounds like a door on rusty hinges opening. You know the classic horror movie creaky door sound.

Any thoughts? Do I just need to get under there and lube the hell out of everything?

Pektel, I know you enjoy the cold up there. We don't have that kind of cold, but you should experience the lake effect snow! :D
 
Maybe a lube, it does happen with all kinds of cars this time of year. Could be bushings???

I hear it from time to time when its cold out but it usually goes away.
 
Could this have anything to do with the clockspring? Mine is going bad, and my wheel is creaking pretty bad.

Same spooky movie creeking noise happens to me. The revs go up about 500 when i turn the wheel and two nights ago the car stalled out when I put it in reverse and started to turn the wheel. I'm not sure however what the problem is with the creaking noise, but it would be nice if somebody did know.
 
Yes, it isn't in the steering wheel itself. It is down in the steering system somewhere. It sounds like it comes more from the drivers side, but that could be because that is my side of the car.
 
Ball joints or tie rod ends are bad. Classic Ford problem.

sway bar bushings and or end links. just had this prob are you lowered???
 
Nope, despite my sig, it is actually bone stock. About 45k miles on it. My first thought was tie-rod ends. But, I would rather it be something really quick and easy considering how snowy it is here.
 
Do this

Have someone inside the car turn the wheels while you listen from the outside and pin point the noise, could just be a whining power steering pump. Nooooooo, you guys are right,,,,,ball joints groaning.

jack the car up and check for play in the ball joints, if none then its sway bar bushings IMO
 
I can almost guarentee its the steering rack and pinion. Just before my warranty ran up I got that replaced and i know exactly what sound your talking about. Since getting it replaced i have no problems but on a cold start up (im from Buffalo we get a lot of those) I still tend to hear it but it goes away within minutes of driving.
 
Thanks for the help guys. I'll see if I can get it on my friend's lift. I'm really not looking forward to this. I have a feeling it is going to get expensive.

Expensive? Sure

I used to think my LS was expensive, till I got a girlfriend to go with it! She makes the LS look like a bargain! :eek:
 
Well due to sucky weather I have been putting off dealing with it. But the noise has gotten bad enough I am going to have to take care of it this weekend. The noise is definitely coming from the drivers side front. It isn't only related to steering. Now I can stand outside the car and rock it back and forth and the squeak is there just from the suspension moving. That tells me it isn't the steering rack. I'm thinking the bushing problem or ball joints. Does that sound about right?

ya its the sway bar bushings for sure i had same exact symptoms
 
Good. That isn't too bad. I'll replace them this weekend and let everyone know how it turned out.
 
wow , mine made the same sound when wheel was turning and when i pushed down on the car, new sway bar and links took care of it. good luck, the knuckle is pretty exp i think
 
I can do it myself and get the part from a friend for around $450. Or, I can pay a local shop here that I've used in the past $600 and get it done without having to be crawling around on my gargage floor in the freezing cold.

$600 it is.
