Starting problems

Washed my 95 LSC and got it all pretty up and got in to start it up and it tried to start but it just cough and spit and smoke. Tried to restart and I when I turned the key I heard the fuel pump just stay on and the the cooling fan turned on and stayed on. I also noticed that the CEL light is blinking when the key in on. After doing a little reshearch it sound like the VCRM but it also could be the PCM. Your thoughts becasue I don't know were to start.

I'd say the PCM, ECU, computer.... People call them so many names but I have a 93 W3Z3 in my closet that I tried to put in my black 94 that I had and it done the same exact thing. It would turn over but not start and also, the cooling fan would come on with just the key on. I swapped back over to the Z4H0 and it craned right up like nothing was ever wrong. So, with that said, I would have to say another computer will get you going again.

Might want to try disconnecting the battery for about 10 min and connect it back and give it another try and see what happens. Did you wash the engine too? I'm assuming you did because a simple car wash isn't going to mess with the computer but if you got under the hood with water in the wrong spot, it could have shorted it out somehow.

No, did not wash the engine. So what I here you saying is that I should start with the PCM/ECM? I tried to keep engine going and hope that if I got it going it would start to run on its own but to no avail. I am in need of a new ECM if anyone has one. I will pull the unit and check the code.
 
That's where I would start. You can use a W3Z2, DZA1, Z4HO and possibly a W3Z3 so that's the ones you want to look for. You can't use one from a 96 at all. If you want me to and (if you'll pay for the shipping both ways), I'll send you a DZA1 for you to try and if that fixes the problem, then you'll know what you need to get but I do not want to sell mine. I will however let you use mine to either find out if that's the problem or eliminate it as not being the problem. The one I have is good, I do know that.
 
I appreciate all your help. I just went out and too disconnect the battery. I am willing to accept your offer. Let's me try this battery step first and then I will pull the ECM out and see what code it is and maybe I will at least know what I am workin with.

This will be what you're looking for and this is most likely the catch code you'll have.

This one would work for you and it's one of the cheapest I could find but again, I can't say for certain that this is your problem.

You also need to make sure your inertia button is pressed in. It's located in the trunk, inside the little door where the air ride switch is. I don't see why it would need to be reset just because you washed the car but anything is possible. As for sending the computer back and forth, you'll be looking at around $12 total. That's me sending it and you sending it back, all together. If you decide you want me to send mine, just PM me your address info and I'll send it out tomorrow if my post office is open. I can also print out a shipping label here at home and it will for sure go out tomorrow. It's up to you.
 
Well now, I disconnected the battery and let it set for a couple of hours and after dinner I went out and the car started up at his and stumbled a bit until it warmed up and everything is ok at the moment. I have the brakes to do tomorrow and I will updated you if something goes crazy. Looks like its time to change the Ibs solenoid and EGR. I was going to wait until I drop this transmission. Ok, just let me know and if you do end up needing me to send this one to you, PM me your address and I'll send it to eliminate it as the problem and yes, the EGR is much easier to deal with when the trans is dropped.
 
Ok, I just wanted to update this because the same starting problems. I have since installed new ignitions coils, sparks plugs, fuel fitler. The car has been running okay until last night when it stranded me and I had to walk home. So I went back and it started up just fine and I got it home. When to a local shop and got these codes. KOEO, 113,542,117,123. KOER, 587, 632. I took care of the 117 code and changed the coolant temp sensor and the engine starts better and I have better performance. So I am waiting to see what happens next. Could my EGR be stuck open. Your thoughts are welcome.
