New to the forum...first off my car had been sitting untouched for about 3 months and as expected it doesn't start. I called AAA and they came and gave me a jump and the car started immediately. The guy told me to keep the car running for a while and I kept it running for about 30 minutes and I could not reverse or drive. Then I cut the car off and it would not start at all. I took the battery to advance auto parts and they just told me that the battery was low and they charged the battery for me for 45 minutes. When I got home I put the battery back in nothing happened again. What do you all think is going on?

you probably have corroded battery cables. sounds like your battery is not holding a charge or you have a power distribution disconnect with the wires. could be somthing simple , do you see any blue corrosion at either end of the battery cables? as far as going into gear sounds like your shift linkage may be rusted.

First of all, you never want to let an alternator charge up a battery, especially in a Mark VIII. The alternator is probably shot now and obviously, the battery can't live in the Mark because it is power hungry. Have the alternator checked and make sure the battery doesn't have a bad cell.

As for not being able to put the car in reverse or forward, I think that has to do with one of your tail lights being burnt out. Tail lights / brake lights, one of the two will stop you from doing so but you can turn the key enough to unlock the steering and put it in neutral. If one of your brake lights are out, it's not going to let you go in reverse or in any gear while running.

+1 not a good idea.

i think he was told not to, as opposed to not being able to? that's not clear to me.

dead alt or not, a charged battery should start your car. since it started when jumped, i'm gonna say its a battery problem.
and check your battery terminals. common problem. the stock terminals suck big time.

my old 93 didnt have any problems going into gear when the brake lights were out, does it have to be all of them or was that only foe certain years?

It could very well be his battery but remember, he was jumped off. While it was running, he may have been killing the alternator but then again, if he has stock terminals, yes, they do suck. Again, he was jumped off, not fully charged until they charged it for him for 45 min, which leads me to below.

I'm not real sure on this but it seems like if a brake light is out, the car will not allow you to go into reverse or any gear. Not sure on years but I'll see if I can search that up. I know I have seen this before but it's been a while.

the OP needs to come back! i want more info. we need to know if his brake lights work. but i vote BOO switch, not MLPS.

I think so too and as I searched around, it seems to be more with Gen 2's neon problems.

If it's a fuse

Fuse #32 15A: Brake On/Off Switch, Brake Pressure Switch
yup. boo switch.

the mlps acts more along the lines of a neutral safety switch and gear indicator. if the car knows he is in park and lets him start the car, mlps is doing alright.
if the boo switch won't activate the thing that retracts to let him shift, he can't shift.

coke does the job for me. mountain dew gives me the bg's. i work at night so i dont feel your pain. lol

Dews all the way. This is seriously what my top shelf looks like all the time.
