im really torn on what direction to take with my car. its basically stock now, but i dont want it to stay that way. i dont really like 15.5x timeslips. its my dd and not really raced very often at all, so id like to keep some semblance of decent fuel economy, but at the same i want it to be capable of 13's and a fun drive. what are your suggestions for what direction to take the car?

What year is yours? You can always look at my list of mods and go off that. You can see prices of stuff too if you look for deals and do some work yourself. My car drives like a stocker no problems at all. For a DD and to save cash I would do stall and J-mod and be done in trans dept. 5 speed will add up fast trans, throw out bearing arm, cable, pedals, flywheel, clutch kit, shifter and comp relocate. At your HP level auto trans will be no problem.

For track times stalled auto, but fun factor has to be a 6speed, I'm hoping to do a 6speed in my 97 this summer :D

A J-Mod, tune, and converter will do wonders for your car. Unless you just want to shift gears the auto will be cheaper and plenty fun with a few mods.

for a very short time i have a 5spd mark and it was a ton of fun. If you can do the work yourself and get it done right thats the route I would take. I probably wouldve kept the one I had if it didnt need a bunch of stuff to make it right. wouldve ended up costing me a lot more than it was worth.

the thing that really makes me want the 5 or six speed is the deeper overdrive (and double overdrives) that would allow me to run some aggressive rear gears and not cringe every time i have to drive any kind of distance at highway speeds. the other side im looking at is the $$$ standpoint, something im clearly not made of, and thats the one real big advantage i can see to the stalled auto. i really do value your guys's input, and you all have been very helpful in my time here. thanks all

Picture what you want out of the car.
Understand what your capabilities are.
Get a budget you can spend.
If your budget is small, just start collecting parts to go down the path you choose.

That will help you go forward.

The car works as a package.

I would get your gears/tune first.
I run a 4.10 daily...and love them, my car sees 80 miles of freeway driving 4 days a week.
Some days I wish I went deeper.
Don't fear the RPM.

But its not the best choice for a 3650.
You might want a stock LSC gear for that set up or 3.73.
It all has to work together to get the most enjoyment out of your car.

stalled auto is gonna be alot cheaper.

+1 a stalled auto is definately gonna be a helluva lot cheaper compared to a stick tranny. just go to templeperformancecars.com -- i think his 6 speed swap is close to 7k -- thats expensive, but im sure im not the only one who thinks a stick mark 8 would be fun, in the end it comes down to what you are going to like driving every day if its a DD.

what did it need? im curious to know what was done to make it work and what else had to be done to daily drive it, i'd eventually like to put a stick into mine

but at the same i want it to be capable of 13's and a fun drive.

13s with an auto? No problem. At that point your not even at 300 rwhp and the 4R70W is capable of handling 500 before any worries. Burbank ran a 10.6 with an automatic. The manual swap will cost more money, require a bit of work, but you will lose considerably less rwhp through the drivetrain and you can throw the world at it. There's pros and cons to both.

I once thought of doing this, but I would rather not, alot of work and money involved. I would suggest the j-mod and getting it stalled. None the less, here are some more manual swap topics and info to look over. Think the manual swap would total up between 1500-2000.

Auto Mark shifts tons faster in my opinion. The only way I think you would replicate an auto would be to have a slap shift setup with a shift light.

INCREDIBLE!!! A MUST SEE!!! BIG WHEELSTAND LENCO 4 SPEED 70 DUSTER INCAR CAMERA SHOT - YouTube

I am perfectly happy with the auto, but I'll tell ya what. Give me a setup like that Duster has in the last video with the Lenco trans and that would kick some royal ass in the Mark VIII. I :q:q:q:qing love watching that Duster. 145mph mirror adjust like it aint no thing but a chicken wing LOL And the transmission setup? Well that's just godly. I want it.

Just face plate a tremec and keep your throttle foot planted to the floor all the time thru 1/4. Way cheaper.

This

The 4V likes revs. You will lose a little mileage with deep gears but it's really not that bad. The stall def cost me a few MPG around town though. And stock tires+4.10s+stall=lots of tire smoke. If this car is not sold by the spring it's getting DRs.

In my opinion (or experience) I had an SVX that was like the Mark with a 4 speed auto. I wanted a stick so bad I traded it in on a WRX that I upgraded to a 6 speed close ratio with a Tilton twin disc on off switch clutch.

I picked up my Mark as a DD but as usual I wanted it faster. When I lost my trans in it I was thinking stick swap but I sold the car instead. Got my 98' and every time I am stuck in traffic I'm glad it's an auto.

Still wanna Baumann, 3800 and 4:30 it tho if my job isn't that far a commute
