I noticed my car squeals when the engine is cold. It goes away completely when hot. I'm guessing its a belt? The dealer told me this car has an automatic belt adjuster? Its an 00 V8, 116k.

Man I had same problem with my car. After I installed new motor cleaned all the pulleys and used a pick to clean every grain of dirt out of the great looking Ford belt it would make that noise cold. I tried belt dressing and still would not shut up. Ended up cleaning all pulleys again and installed a new Goodyear polycog belt and quiet as a mouse now. That belt only like 36 dollars at AZ. I had to have them order it, didn't have it in stock.

make sure your coolant is good to go, there's an article in the tech section on how to bleed your coolant system, I'd recommend doing that. Also, some members have problems with the steering pump squealing, I think there's an additive that ford recommends you put in it. Just some things to try.

How do I get to the belt? I haven't really poked around the engine yet.

Probably just the belt. Automatic tensioners don't last forever. It's just a spring loaded pulley, and like any other spring it will loosen up with age. You should probably replace that along with the belt.

Getting the belt off is easy enough, its getting the new one on that's the problem. Unless you have unnaturally skinny arms, then it might be OK.

yep nreplace tensioner and idler pully and you should be good .. pop hood and try to locate the sound first,,, may be just the idler
