How hard is it to replace the spark plugs and wires on my 2000 Lincoln LS V6 and should I just take it to my machanic. What is the cost.

Go to the TECH ARTICLES at the top of the page, there is a write up.

well for a first post, im surprised we got the year and motor

also, it is not easy at all.

I'd say that three of the six spark plugs are pretty easy to change.

The spark plug wires are really hard to change because you can't find them.
(To the OP: It's a Coil-On-Plug engine, there are no spark plug wires.)

half or the job being easy and the other half being a PITA, sounds like a PITA job to me.lol:D unless you only want to change half of the coils out

i guess you could call the springs and boots the spark plug wires if you really want to ;)

Oh, I quite agree. The problem is the lack of reference. What's easy to one can be hard for another. Certainly, the V8 is much easier to change plugs on than the V6.

In any event, it was apparently too hard for stevencheatham to search the site before asking the question, so even the easy three plugs may be too hard for him...

I'm wanting to learn my way around the car a little. I'm reading the tech article (for spark plugs) and it doesn't make sense to me. Each spark plug should be inspected for different problems? The first one for a bridged gap then next one for oil fouling. I thought they were all the same. And as far as I can tell, in the article it says to remove ignition coil and then the spark plugs can be gotten to? Please excuse me for my noobishness but I want to learn. I literally spend about an hour a day reading this forum just going back. I'm good at putting things together and I think I can get some skill. Yesterday I took my break pads off and cleaned then with this stop squealing spray and I was able to do it without even looking it up.

-Also, I need tools. Probably a ratchet set. Is there anything anyone can recommend for a starter like me?
Sorry for the minor thread jacking!

*edit okay I see you need to get to the ignition coils. Read the deneau manual.

You should check each spark plug for each and every problem. (Check #1 for bridging, check #1 for fouling, check #1 for ..., then check #2 for ... and so on.)

What year is your LS?
Which engine?

I don't know what engine you have but for me (2001 V6) I only needed a few tools an extension, size 8 and 10 socket and deep socket (I needed both), and size 8 and 10 wrench as well...I found a couple places I couldn't get into with a socket at all....depending on your engine you might need a few other parts cuz with mine while I had the intake off I replaced the manifold gaskets and pcv elbow too...might as well while your in there so you don't have to do what I did and take the damn intake off like 4 times....btw I'm a pro at it now!!!!

@Stevencheatham: How hard is it to replace the spark plugs and wires on my 2000 Lincoln LS V6 and should I just take it to my machanic. What is the cost.

It really depends on how much work you feel like doing and how much time you have....first I would definately say: Get your manifold gaskets, and pcv valve and elbow before you even think about starting...as well as the coil packs and spark plugs...your gonna want to replace all of that while you have the intake off (sorry if I'm forgetting anything I am sure these guys will correct me if I am)....and I live in Washington State and I was quoted in the range of $600-$1000 just to do my plugs because of the intake...seriously if you have the time and will, it is like a $200-$300 job if you do it yourself....plus I don't trust mechanics....but that is just me :) If you search the articles I just did this on my 2001 LS V6 and posted many questions and a few pics as I was going through it....and by the way...have a digital camera or your phone camera and take pictures as you pull stuff apart....I wish I had done that more as I was doing mine...but once I had it done it became a peice of cake!! Good luck!!

Look for spark plug picture charts, like this one...

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqread.asp

In general this covers things you will see if you change enough plugs over time.

They also tell you likely causes.

Best to replace all plugs at the same time same brand and #, ie don't mix and match, the LS computer is easily fooled.

I have read that the V6 is a bit of a pita requiring removal of all or part of the intake. So this might be a dealer or shop mechanic job if you aren't too familiar with simple engine work.

So yes check each plug for all conditions. I also like to snif them. The smell can tell you if it is running rich(Gas) or burning oil(oily). But a picture is worth a thousand words.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I have an 04 V8. Thank you for replying. One day soon I'm gonna attempt this. I'll let you guys know how it works out
