You're gonna get opinions all over the place on this one.
I've run a Pioneer F90BT and currently a Pioneer X920BT in mine. The F90BT was run using the stock speakers (audiophile system) and subs and sounded pretty good. My X920BT is run with Infinity speakers, Alpine subs, Alpine and Kicker amps (see sig). While the F90BT with stock speakers was good, moving to better speakers and amps took it to a whole new level. It's all about how good you want it to sound to YOUR ears, and how much you're willing to pay for it.
The Pioneers have the best interface and control with iPods/iPhone devices, and offer some cool features like controlling Pandora from the receiver (new X series and iPhone only). However, the navigation is reputed to be worse than the Kenwood receivers. The navigation software in the F90 was good, but took a step backwards in the X920. Kenwoods use Garmin's NAV system, and while it looks simple graphically, it's reputation for being the best or most accurate is agreed to by most.
I can live with the navigation quality (or lack thereof depending on opinions) in my X920, as I rarely use it. The interface and control of my music collection (iPod) and sound quality was most important to me.
So, my advice is to spend your money on something that will give you what is most important to you. You won't regret it.

Same here, I've had the Avic F90Bt and then upgraded to the X9020BT. Like it better because it has the same interface as the z series. The only thing that I wish they would have put on the X series was the 4V pre outs. Other than that,I like mine a lot.

Are there any units that still allow the steering wheel controls to work?

Pioneer x920bt is what i run also.....along with 4 way pioneer speakers in all the doors and a 10" jL W6 couldnt ask for anything better clean and great sounding all around

Lockman, PAC makes an adapter that integrates with the Ford harness and aftermarket radios. Depends on which aftermarket receiver you have. The SW1 is for Pioneers and I believe Kenwoods. Alpines and other brands use a different model. They are programmable so you can even assign your steering wheel buttons to other functions if you want.
I changed the media button on mine to start the voice activation feature.

well it all comes down to how much you are going to spend. less than $500, dont bother. $500-$700, AVIC X, or kenwood 6000 series. Over a grand =, then you should be looking at either a AVIC Z, a execlon, or a alpine.
for best sound quality, i would recommend a combination of an Alpine with the micro add on 4CH, but if you wanted this then you wouldn't think that the stock speakers would be fine.
also make sure you budget a good amount of money for all the extras.
dash kit and wire harness will be between $30-$40, the XM tuner will run about $100-$110, steering wheel controls adapter will be about $60, and if you need to have it installed, you probably be looking around $175-$250 to have it properly installed. hell if your going, you might as well go big and throw in another $50-$150 for a back up camera since pretty much all aftermarket radios will support it. so you could be looking at over $500 just for all the things to go with it.
i do recommend the AVIC's for best bang for the buck as their radios pack the most features for one of the lower prices (new X920's can be found online for $500-$600)
