So my 8 day vacation is coming up, and it's gonna be spent tuning up/fixing up things here and there on the 96 LSC. I already had her up on jack stands, just to check everything out. I'm thinking of cutting the exhaust and removing the 3rd cat-and install turn downs, like how my 95 Thunderbird was set up-sounded mean.

Now i know alot of you guys have experience here, i'm guessing i'm gonna free up roughly 8-10rwhp. Also how loud will this be..? I want it to sound HOLYS*IT LOUD  when i get on it haha. I'm also removing the air silencer and i'm gonna cap off the air intake resonator aswell.

I can just throw the exhaust pipes back on next year when it needs to be inspected. Haha, and i'm aware of the Police..i'll keep a close eye on my right foot.

PS i know it's not the smartest thing having exhaust under the car, but i figure as long as i'm not idling for an hour-i'll be fine...hopefully:eek:

i'm gonna cap off the air intake resonator aswell.

might want to actually learn what that thing IS and what it does before you just arbitrarily take it off.

Some folks "think" it's just a silencer when it actually "HAS" a function in relation to an EFI system..and it's not only acoustics that are affected by removal of that/those devices.

What does it actually do then..? I removed it on my 93 mark, it was ok. I thought it is to silence the intake even further?? I might have to install an X pipe if i do the removal of 3rd cat...

There is very little "good information" in regards to these on the internet.
Typical "internet hype" saying it's "ONLY" a muffler..

with that said, I point you to page 78 of Greg Banish's book "engine management advanced tuning".

here is a web version of that page...notice the pictures and the short description.

http://www.cartechbooks.com/vstore/showdetl.cfm?DID=6&Product_ID=3012&CATID=3&chapter=8449

"The hook-shaped appendage on the inlet tube is a Helmholtz resonator, used to cancel out standing wave vibrations that would otherwise corrupt the MAF signal at low speeds as well as make an audible noise."

Wow, thanks for opening my eyes to that. Looks like i will just remove the silencer in the fender/wheel area.

I'm gonna leave my beauty cover on, so you don't even see it. I like that cover anyway, looks good. After all, the mark 8 engine is no "pretty" engine w/o the cover....ugly engine :-(

Can you guys comment on how the sound will be, just turn downs on each pipe under the car without the 3rd cat? I've read that i'm gonna need an X pipe-is that really needed?

I'd just leave that third cat alone and just take off the mufflers and get new pipes and tips... but that's me.

How much of a sound differance and power differance would it make though, if i removed the 3rd cat compared to just removing muffs?

My 93 base just had removed muffs and removed resonator, it sounded deep and mellow-i'd rather a more "in your face" sound, if you get me lol.

I've never driven one with the resonator removed, just the mufflers and I love how they sound with just the mufflers chopped.
