was on 295 South today in New Jersey. Going down the middle lane at about 80 MPH. Tag Teams must have been out today in full force because I was picking up at one point 1 radar then as I passed 2 more ahead hiding in the previous ones radar shadow(luckily have a V1 so i picked them all up and where the were too). Then a little down the road I'm doing 80MPH in the left lane cruising (stupid I know to hang in that lane). Anyway I pick up a radar slow down but I see he is on 295 N opposite to me so I pick up speed. Few minutes later he picks me up. First thing he does is ask if thats a Valentine 1. Then asks for lic,reg,ins,blah blah runs it and comes back. Ask if I know why he pulled me over so I say no. (I was totally going to play him since I could've gotten out of it no matter what because of my daddy!(biteme)) He say I clocked you doing 79 and posted is 65. I'm like oh did you?! then he says yeah and the other officer clocked you at 83. I was about to piss my pants I was so overjoyed and had a big dumb grin on my face and warm fuzzy feeling in my stomach. He said yeah but I'm only going to write you a ticket for the 79 not the 83. He hands me the ticket few minutes later after I call me dad and tell him the situation. The following is what I did after my dad told me what to do. The cop handed me the ticket and then I will tell you all a little secret if you didn't know.

1. If a cop is in a moving vehicle in the opposite lane of traffic he can NOT clock you...the radar will only show the difference of your speeds not your actual speed.

2.One officer who clocked you can not call ahead to another and tell him to pick you up for what the first officer clocked you doing.....It's entrapment and illegal and can be proven since the one officer must timestamp his radar to the ticket.


I told him this, didnt even have to show him my pretty gold plated officer's family card and we went off on our merry :q:q:q:qing ways.
 
I just have one question:
Why were you only going 80 if you have a get-out-of-jail-free card? :slap:
 
I am assuming that your dad is a cop? You need to check on the statements that you made. I am no expert, but I am a cop and both of them seem untrue and very misleading.
 
I pulled out of my road onto the highway yesterday and floored it. Got up to about 95 let out the gas came around a curve and there was a highway patrol. I got a ticket for 91 in a 65. :mad:
 
is this only for the state of NJ, cause i know i've gotten pulled over by a cop going opposite way
 
Glanga sorry but the can pull you over. They can clock you of course its not possible but they canb and have before made other things up to work around speeding, like encroaching the crest of a hill at a irate speed and such others like that that are obviouse and visible to them.

For christs sake I got nabed by a cop for tossing a smoke out the window.

Thank god I didnt have anything else on me cause I know all they wanted was a case of probable cause and they didnt get anything anyway. In the end I fought it with out a attorney or the publics pretender.

Also, when a cop calls ahead its called a speed trap. That officer waits till the officer that clocked you arives and then the officer that arives takes over.

when i was in texas they said if the state trooper loses sight of you vehicle they can not issue you a ticket. That was back in 2001. Not sure if it was true or not.
 
Radar detector is one of the best aftermarket accessory’s for a Lincoln LS. It can improve performance and reduce operating cost. I have found it is all too easy to be going faster than I should.

The Lincoln LS just wants to run.

I do not condone speeding; the radar detector just makes me more aware of the seed I am going.

When I got pulled over yesterday I was passing in the opposite lane the cop and he clocked me at 91
 
I've been pulled over twice from cops in the opposite lane. And as far as I know(in IL) cops have the laser guns which can detect head-on in cross traffic and accurately figure out the speed of your car. I've been ticketed once from cross-traffic and I was in the car with one of my buddies on the same street same situation. One time he let me go because I was late for work.
 
yeah they set up speed traps all the time on I 95 in FL. one guy sits at the exit, the others sit on the other side of the exit, 95 rises over the perpendicular street so you cannot see the other officers. i can tell these officers love to do this also.
 
sorry but no it all is true, a cop going opposite direction can not tag you, his radar will only show the difference thats not just common sense its physics. if they do then they are lying. in a speed trap the radar that tagged you must provide a time stamp they can not call ahead unless the officer that clocked you arrives and proves its you. thats entrapment and its highly illegal
 
Seems to me that the radar would show a combined speed... your speed + officers speed, I could be wrong though. All they would have to do is subtract thier speed to get a rough est. of yours.
 
Cops doing aircraft patrol (Virginia) call "ahead" all the time. And it's legal.

But question: Is the original poster stating that he called he dad during the traffic stop to get advice? WTF
 
There are signs everywhere about radar enforcement from aircraft, Ive been on all kinds of trips all over the place and seen them at least somewhere or another in every state I had been in includeing Jersy.

And if a cop trys to get you taged while he is in motion on a highway with other traffic there is no of proveing he got your vehicle for sure from what I have heard.
 
this probably has to do with all the union laws in nj :-) I've been ticketed more than once in ohio from the other way, not to mention many traps here in ohio are specifically SET UP with a stationary cruiser to radar then calling ahead for busts. Hell in NJ you can't even pump your own gas or make a left turn so who knows, it may be true :-)
 
usually, cops are stopped on the right hand side of oncoming traffic when they are clocking your speed. another thing, i've never actually handled a "radar", but exactly how is a cop spose to "use" his radar AND drive at the same time when talking on a cellphone is illegal?
 
but you dont get that they HAVE to prove this in the court. they have to have physical evidence you were speeding which is a timestamped ticket otherwise there is no use any sane judge has to throw it out. maybe virginia is different i know radar detectors there are illegal.

if you are "tag teamed" the radar that clocked you is the one that has to prove you were speeding. they can not call ahead and have another officer write you a ticket on the heresay of the first one they must have the physical evidence.

yes when the cop walked back to his car i called my dad to let him know i'd been pulled over and to give the officers name to see if he knew him. he didnt and i gave him the details of how he pulled me over.

maybe this is different for other states but my dad was a jersey state trooper for 35 years, most of that on the new jersey turnpike and ending his career as a major in troop b in north jersey. and i'd beleive him over anyone else on here....especially since he was right and the cop could only give me a warning. dontget me wrong i am absolutely courteous to any police officer, i always pull far over, have all my papers ready,car off, interior lights on, and hands on the wheel. but if they are going to go out of their way to be an ass just because they are in a bad mood then i will too and if its from a new jersey statie then they wont touch me.

most police vehicles have mounted radars facing directly forward, thats why a cop sits diagonal to the road, they cannot tag you sideways as if they are sitting in an alley, the radar will not pick you up. so unless the cop is driving down the road with a handheld radar gun out the window pointing at you in opposite traffic side of traffic while hes driving, then hes full of sh**....most of that is common sense

so ohiolse please tell me where i am wrong in this???? and make sure that its not just different from ohio to new jersey.
 
You are absolutely incorrect on both points. I'm a police officer also who happens to be RADAR and LIDAR (laser) certified. Radar always tracks the patrol units speed and calculates the speed of the violator, makes its calculations and displays the "target" vehciles speed...not just the difference. Your remark about sitting diagonal is WRONG. Either parallel to traffic or perpendicular (if stationary) is best. When you are diagonal you create a cosine effect and the radar reading starts to get thrown off.

As for "tag teaming" as you called it you can definitely cite a speeder based on another officer's detection. As someone said earlier it's done all the time by aircraft or by using 1 officer stationary and calling way ahead to mobile units to make the stop. Check with the Supreme Court...any officer can take enforcement actions on a person based on information provided by a fellow officer.

Having a retired cop as your daddy is not a substitute for doing your homework and knowing this stuff first hand.
 
What I find hard to believe is that a Law Enforcement Officer will tear up a ticket after it's been written up and handed to the offender, no matter who you are or what you say to them.

In my book, that just never happens and I would be interested in hearing comments about that from the Officers who read this thread.
 
well the fact about an officer calling ahead i dont know if this is the same theory but i know when they use a laser gun the cop hiding somewhere and a different cop gets called to which car is speeding and gets pulled over...(dont wana be calling u wrong tho cause thats not quite the same thing but yeah) and for the opposite side i know theres a way cause my dad is a retired cop and i know he said they can he just never did cause he didnt caree to do it but the cop can like subtract his speed by the posted or some sh*t or something like that and then the cop can get an approx. of wut u were doing
 
"Moving radar is much more complicated than stationary radar, which needs only to read moving targets within range. Moving radar must make two measurements, the relative speed between the target vehicle and the moving patrol car, and the actual patrol-car speed. It then calculates the target vehicle’s speed by adding to or subtracting from the patrol-car speed. If you’re thinking this process is subject to lots of electronic confusion, you’re absolutely right.
Not long ago, moving radar worked only on oncoming traffic, and it erred in that simple job. In the last five years, the addition of “same lane” capability gives readings on vehicles moving in the same direction as the patrol car. They can be either ahead of the patrol car or behind, which multiplies hugely the possibilities for error.
No matter whether the target is oncoming or traveling in the same direction, it can be clocked accurately only if the radar gets a correct reading on the patrol-car’s speed. “Vehicle Interference Errors” including “shadowing” all result from the wrong reading for patrol speed. For example, as moving radar looks for reflections from terrain that would allow it to calculate patrol speed, it sometimes grabs on to the stronger reflection from, say, the back of a truck moving in traffic. If the patrol car is moving at 45 mph, and the truck at 25, the radar calculates the patrol speed relative to the truck instead of the ground. It wrongly decides the patrol speed is 20 mph. "

NOW........THIS MAY NOT BE SO FOR OTHER DEPARTMENTS unless your this naive and dont read my whole post. not every department in the world operates the same. not every department uses thesame equipment.

njsp uses older radar equipment and very few lasers

i dont really care if your lidar and radar certified, but from what i know cosine effect only happens from overpasses or on hills...... maybe im wrong im not radar and lidar certified but that is simple trigonometry.
 
Im in Jersey all the time. The hardest that I find to be true is the fact that you got pulled over.

Traffic in Jersey goes that fast on a regular basis if you do 80 past cops which I have plenty of times they dont even bother with you unless you are driving like a jerk. They dont care as long as the traffics flowing and not beein ubstructed by people doing stupid stuff at that speed.


Now I have also been in a vehicle in a case that we were doing around 90 and a cop passed in the on comeing lane, the cop busted a quick U turn and pulled us over. He said he had no way of clocking us but it was obviouse we were speeding, that gave him a probabl cause to ticket us for other reasons, pluss they train state troopers/highway patrol everywhere to be able to do the math and find out how long it takes them to catch up to you at what speeds and this guy was dead on when he did the math.

The "cosine effect" will come into play whenever the officer is shooting at an angle other than directly head-on or tail-on. The greater the angle, the lower the speed reading, until you reach 90* (ie, perpendicular to the direction of travel), when the speed reading drops to 0. (You can thank physics and vectors for that.)

Note that this is the angle of the radar beam to the target, not the angle of the police vehicle. Depending on how the radar is mounted, the car can be parked in any of several directions and still get a head-on or tail-on reading.
 
It's not maybe, you ARE wrong. And by the way, I don't remember you telling us all that you got out of your car and inspected the model radar he was using. Maybe you're just making assumptions? When was the last time YOU trained on how these devices work?

Both direction Radar has been around for much longer than the last 5 years. During a cosine effect the patrol speed is still accurate, the target vehicle speed is incorrect.
