Smoke from Steering Column

Recently on my 02 Continiental I got a puff of smoke from the steering column right behind the wheel. It's happened twice since (over a month span) and it occurs randomly (not at cranking, just cruising down the road). Everything works perfectly; stalk controls, steering wheel controls, etc.

Is there a known issue or common problem in the column or am I going to have to just rip the column covers off and try to dianose?

First I ever heard of this. Pull the wheel and covers, problem area should stick out like a sore thumb. Post some pics of the problem when you find it so others will know.
