Smoke coming from the message center.

Here's the story of the issues so far. (97 LSC) About a month ago the car wouldn't start so I pulled the crank position sensor and tried that. The issue ended up being a dead battery but just the last week the car wouldn't start again and pulling and replugging in the crank position sensor got the car started. Yesterday I got stranded because the car wouldn't start at all. I had it towed home and a couple hours later the car started up. I ddint' drive it anywhere but looked into getting and putting in a new crank position sensor. This morning, just for kicks, i got in and started it again. It didn't start immediately but it started. At that point I noticed smoke waffing out of message center area. I turned the car off and popped off the button panel to try to see where the smoke was coming from. It was an electric burning smell. I then turned the car back on and I saw more smoke but within 20 seconds the car died. Started the car again, and It got to idling for about 5 seconds and died again. I noticed the abs message on the message center in the speedometer area of the car on at that point.

Anyone know what could be causing this. I have some tokico shocks coming in and will be replacing the transmission fluid this week and getting under the car to do these things along with replacing the crank position sensor so the car is sitting for the moment.
 
There is a wire loom that is very close to a "inner dash support"

You've probably gotten those wires chafed and shorted out when you did the blend door.

can I tell you exactly where, no..because this is an issue that only you can pinpoint.

your gonna be pulling the dash back again, check your work.. you've screwed up something.

do NOT start or try to start the car again, with SMOKE coming from your dash.

your gonna kill alot of high dollar components should you not heed this warning.

yea its always a good idea to fix the smoking issue BEFORE trying to restart the car, the smoke is a very good sign that something is VERY wrong ,unless carBQ's are your thing, then by all means, go ahead fire it up

To prior posters. Yes, I understand what you are saying. I am pulling the radio later today and I'll see If I can find anything.
 
Yea, ;-) Pulled everything but the dash and don't see where the smoke could have been coming from. I started the car and watched for smoke (with a smoke extenguisher just in case) I didn't see any smoke, not smelled anything. Plug the car started and ran fine. No warning on the dash. This was with the radio, display button panel, and iar conditioner center out.

Pulling the center counsel next as I have to put in a new cigarette lighter.

Any thoughts on where this could have been coming from? I would guess the radio first but everything looks fine.
 
start smelling the stuff you removed, radio ect.
you should be able to narrow down which one has released the blue smoke
 
I say put each component in separately and see which one starts smoking and go from there (if smelling them doesn't work). Keep that extinguisher handy as well.

It could be the wires leading up to the device and maybe they aren't "hot" unless they're plugged in.
 
May not have originated right behind the message center, but lower in the dash and came out there, just a thought
