Smoke coming from my hood

I get smoke coming from the driver's side of my hood right next to the windshield. It smells like burnt rubber and happens about 1 out of 5 times I drive the car and it is my daily driver. There is nothing leaking that I can see and it seems to happen after I may have done a WOT run whether it be on the highway or street. I don't know if it is consistent b/c I can't see the smoke while driver but it only comes out after I have come to a stop. Any ideas?

I talked with a mechanic at a Lincoln dealership and there is a blowoff type of thing over there that I did tighten to make sure the fluid was not leaking but it still hasn't stopped.

My car started having the same problems. Only its every time I start the car and happens even when the car is parked and running. When I drive, I can smell it through the air vents and it smells like a something is burning. I think that it's some kinda hose or something, if anyone knows please let us know!!!

Mine is also the V8 model in case that makes a difference. The car only has 49k on the clock.

most likely it's the valve covers leaking - a very common issue with the pre-03 LSes.

once they start leaking - your car either starts to misfire because oil gets into the spark plug wells - our you start smoking as oil gets on to the exhaust manifold.

Take a flask light and look down by the brake booster to see the exhaust manifold - if you see oil there - it's your vavle cover gaskets.

it is probably the valve covers leaking. They leak onto the manifold and the oil makes a burning smell. It happens to me when I drive the car harder than normal. I am going to change the gaskets over xmas.

Lou's right on target. I've seen this issue many times, particularly with 2000 models and it's most always valve cover gaskets. Hopefully your coils aren't affected, but I wouldn't count on it.

I had the same symptoms. Valve Cover Gaskets were the culprits with mine.

do a search on this site. You can do it yourself IF you are VERY comfortable working on engines, in tight spaces, with small bolts/nuts, cramped hand quarters, etc.

Otherwise....it's between $700 and $1200 parts and labor at the dealership

I was gonna say, them Flask lights are off the market now. One would be hard pressed to find one.
