My car needed to get smog checked for my registration. Well long story short it didn't pass!!!! They said it was because the intake. My emissions look good but they couldn't tell me anything else. I was just wondering if anyone else in CA had this problem. I ut the stock one back on, but haven't had time to get it rechecked...I'll post again after its done. Also my car actually seems to run better with the stock setup just not as loud with my exhaust.

FYI....My Ls will be for sale soon, as is, I am not parting it out (so please don't ask)

Some states will not pass a vehcile that has visual changes. I think Calif is one, Oregon where I used to live before I returned to Ca had that policy.

An example of not passing other than blatant visual problems, would be an exhaust sytem that has two exhaust pipes cats, mufflers etc instead of the factory single pipe cat and muffler. Even if the dual has better smog performance it may not passs visual.

They can even get as picky as there being two pipes from the muffler is factory while one big pipe from the muffler is not acceptable. This was an issue that prevented me fom getting the better exhaust system on my truck which had a single pipe system back to the muffler with two pipes out of the muffler. The new system would have just used bigger pipes, which is OK, but only one out of the muffler. I would have failed the visual if the inspector was picky.

It comes down to how picky that inspector or station is, if they pull a visual on you. Other states accept CARB stickers but I hear some are not and I even think I read that more are dropping the CARB acceptance and that some dealers are dropping warranty claims for mods.

So if you ever make mods, be sure to keep the parts and put them on if your state is picky.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Yep, happened to me when I didn't go to my regular smog guy. My regular guy said no problem, the new place said "WHOOOO!!" and wanted the CARB info. He didn't even care all the hook-ups were installed.

Sometimes those guys are a little too persnickity!!

if ur not going to part out ur car.. u sohuld atleast consider selling the intake.. like to someone like me.. :D

i also live in california and i had my smog done about a month ago and i have a kkm intake.... no problems

You were lucky Josh if your intake doesn't have a CARB number. Without it, you fail the visual test and no matter how clean the car runs, they aren't supposed to pass it.

That is such total BS! If the car passes the sniffer test, it should pass, period!

It may be BS...but it's the way it is.

I helped a guy who put a late model powertrain in an older car. Now, that can be legal...but you have to put EVERYTHING from the new powertrain into the older vehicle. That older vehicle is no longer used for smog data...the new powertrain is the new standard. So even though the new powertrain was incredibly cleaner than the old (carb vs EFI, etc) it failed inspection until he installed the factory cats in the factory locations and a couple of missing emission components for the vapor control system...including the fuel cap.

Hey Josh do you have the polished intake tube as well as the KKM??? I have both. Thats why I didn't pass visual.

bummer man. i'm pretty positive mine isn't going to pass next year as it barely slid through this year (1 point below the maximum allowed values). i've suspected one of the cats being the main issue but i haven't gotten any typical cat failure signs yet so who knows. either way i feel your pain and good luck with the re-test. PS if you do ever need major emissions repair there is a way to qualify for "free" repairs up to a certain dollar value... i'm sure i'll be looking into this next year when i inevitably fail ;)

good thing Mi doesnt require inspection.... or wait is that really a good thing? ..who cares, im tired as fu<k... btw i hate physics

problem solved

I put my stock setup back on and passed visual, no biggy....
