Should have listened! Reman. Alternator!

In June I bought a Duralast re-manufactured alternator. Lifetime guarantee, built better than specs, etc., etc. never had a problem with them,,,,,,right.......

So its October, and the damn thing goes dead. Battery light came on, I drove about two miles to a good spot and it died.

With some help of strangers, got the alternator off and returned to Autozone.

They checked and sure enough, dead alternator.

Autozone apologized and ordered me a brand new alternator, not a reman. to replace the bad one.

I only hope the new Duralast is better............................
 
lol i hate remans i went through 4 of them once on my mustang before i finnaly got one that worked for more than a couple weeks
 
I would stay away from Auto Zone, Auto Barn etc...alternators, if I was you.
Ford one probably costs x3 as much, but you won't have to worry about having alternator issues for another 100,000 miles.
 
Ah crap!

changed out the alternator and still no start. did not hear fuel pump come on, so i checked the fuses, found #17 blown, diode appears ok, replaced #17 fuse, still no start, can't hear the fuel pump, next to check power to pump, will update soon........
 
My alt failed about three days before a Maxton weekend and no one in the area had one except Autozone. It lasted two months and failed when I was setting in the staging lanes at Maxton, requiring a trip to town. Autozone again and I had to pay for it because I didn't have the receipt with me.

Back home, the local Autozone refunded my payment, and then gave me another replacement several months later. (We're getting pretty good at weaseling the alt out of its surroundings by now. Worst effort was doing it by flashlight in the dirt in the Maxton pits.)

This last exchange was accompanied by the installation of an ammeter to monitor the state of the electrical system and I've had no problems for more than a year. As part of the installation of the new engine that's under construction, I'll use a 200 amp alt, along with a second replacement of the pigtail from the alt to the battery. I'm going to go to welding cable this next time.

I just changed mine this weekend. What a pain that is on the V8. I tried to get NAPA new, but they were back ordered from the factory. I went with NAPA lifetime reman. Anyone ever tried one of these? On my 71 Mustang I bought a new alternator from discount auto parts in 1998. They have since (and now Advance auto parts owns them) replaced it under warranty at least once per year. I can replace that thing by myself in about 30 minutes though.

I learned about those reman alternators back in about '86. They never seem to last more than a year. Since then I pony-up and pay the manufacturer price.

ok, so I swap the fuel relay with the one for the horn #6 to see if it works, all good the relay works,,,,pull out the seat, check voltage at connector to pump, voltage about 11 volts,,,,ok,,,,getting voltage.

I remove the pump, what a pain in the ass, those crap clips holding the fuel lines, who thinks up this :q:q:q:q? One pulled out ok, the other was stuck and had to be pried out, broke the plastic ring and sleeve doing it. Crap!

Pulled the motor and checked it. Yep fried, DOA. Attached a 12 volt power supply and the motor is frozen. Will cut it open to see whats inside later.

Now I need to find a new pump.....this one looks like the Bosch pump, any suggestions?
 
I don't consider the price they charge for their alternators necessarily cheap either $288!

No prob. Best fuel pump out there for us. And the kit is reasonably priced too.
 
Just wondering... is the gen1 v6 part the same and the v8? The part for the v8 is TCA919hp.
 
finished!

installed new alternator, installed new walpro fuel pump. epoxied around the plastic fuel elbows on the pump lid due to removal damage. Turn key to on, and you could hear the fuel pump kick on. Turned key to start and varrrrooooom! She runs again! 120k+ miles and counting.
 
Sweet! Did you get the TCA919hp (255lph) or the regular TCA919 (190lph)?
 
I have that same question.
And if it is the stock replacement is there anybody on here running the TCA919hp (255lph)?

just the stock one, no use buying something i don't need. sorry for the late post, been driving around constantly, nice!

In all honesty, without upgrading the injectors (which is a lot more work than a normal car), I don't see using the full potential of the 255. But it's still going in mine :D
