I am new to the "Mark world" as of july 08 (I love this Car!!!). My question is, Has anyone ran a Taurus SHO 1st or 2nd Gen Manual against their Mark? I only ask because I have owned 3 SHO's and they feel rather close in acceleration.

A race between two evenly matched cars would depend on the driver as any race would. :D

Interesting responses, this is a drag race scenario of course. The third Gens (96+ were not as fast as the 5 speeds. I know one thing though, Bone stock my First SHo (94 5speed) would Peg the 140 mph speedo all day long:D even beat up on a couple 96 Impala SS's. The New SHO looks Ok, but I have my eye on the Pontiac G8 GT.

I think the SHO would be close. 1st Gens are lighter, but it all depends on how well the SHO and Mark have been maintained. A SHO without a 60k done will probably get whipped by a Mark 8. A properly maintained SHO might hang with it.

i have owned 2 SHOs. my first one a friend of mine still owns. has intake, exhaust, light flywheel and a clutch. my mark with just cut off mufflers pulled him by about a car and 1/2 from a first gear roll, and about 2 cars on a 60mph roll. the mark stock was about the same as my lightly modded 1st gen SHO, which would put about a car on my buddies gen 2 SHO.

I currently own both a stock 1991 Taurus SHO MTX and a stock 1993 Mark VIII, and I have to say that the SHO just feels faster. Maybe its because the Mark isn't a 5spd but it just doesn't have that throw you into your seat feeling that the SHO does

It's probably the five speed giving you that sensation-
my cousin has both SHOs and we've had this discussion, arriving at the same conclusion many times.

Here's an article on the '97 SHO from Motortrend:

220hp - 3400lbs 15.4545 lbs/hp
280hp - 3768lbs 13.457 lbs/hp

Yep Mk8 wins on paper

99 Solara V6 - 200hp
98 LSC - 290

my friends Solara takes me from a stand still until about 60-65 when the Mark wakes up and i fly by him.......its the way FWD are geared.

ohh, those poor gen 2 mark viii's

:D

i never met a solar i didnt eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner

ps. the best way to beat em from a dig is to flash the converter,,not load it up.
of course this is stock mark viii

we were both stock back then, havent raced again, i think we should now lol......always go from idle.....now my other friends Prelude we both beat.......and its modded, go figure

Yea, for some reason the SHO's feel faster. The gearing makes up for the loss of power from a dig. My friend has a stock solara and we stay about dead even till 80 (In my SHO) I have yet to race him since i got the Mark 8. 1/4 mile times for the SHO and the Mark seem kinda close??

I also have owned a '89,a '92 and finally a '94 SHO, I made the mistake of buying out of my FORD lease. Engine blew up, warranty replaced it with a rebuilt,it took 6 weeks to get, and it failed in 10,000 miles. So anyone want a 6 cylinder coil from a 94 SHO? I have it in my storage building? I will sell it cheap.

lost down low to a solara? thats like getting beat in arm wrestling to your little sister!!! anyway if an SHO does inch a mark viii out (which I don't think it would) when the day is over your're still driving a lincoln coupe......not a 4dr ford tarus :steering

well said rich, I read this a couple of times and thought to myself..

there are thousands of things that set the mark 8 heads and shoulders above the taurus...

I've yet have one stock or modded beat the Mark 8 that I was driving
