I dont want console shift, I'm working on audio/video among other things and for certain reasons which I'm keeping on the downlow till it's finished, I want a different shifter location. I want to glass where the shifter currently is in the console. Is the stock shifter system, electric or mechanical, if it's electrical does anyone know of any tpe of electronic shifters out there that would work ? I saw something on american hot rod one time, but I think that used like an actuator in place of the shifter cable. Any help ? I wish this car had a column shift.

It's mechanical...sort of. The regular stuff (not the sst part) pulls a cable that connects up with a piece on the transmission. The piece it mates up to is all electronic except it appears the park position has mechanical functionality. the sst is all electrical.

the sst is worthless to me, I played with it on the test drive and thats it. It's pointless to me otherwise the car feels faster in d4/d5 than sst anyways, and I'm not drag racing it so I dont need to rev the balls out of it

"00-02 is mechanical, "03+ is electronic

^not exactly. Like I said (I have 03) the shifter still uses a mechanical cable to get to the trans. However the device on the trans it hooks to appears to be electronic. The point is it's still a mechanical cable moving that piece on the trans.

It seems to me it HAS to have some sort of mechanical linkage in order to engage the parking pawl. But you could do this with some creativity. You just need to make good and sure all the electrical switches are still functional or you could run into other issues.

I forget who did it, but someone has put paddle shifters on their LS.

I'm pretty sure that was Quik and IIRC, he used BMW paddles and it was very easy to do. But these were in addtion to the stock shifter...not instead of...and were only for SST mode. You will still need to be able mechanically control the trans.

Well that just sucks. I wonder if I could just move the factor shifter somewhere

but wouldnt know where, Basically I would just need the lever without the bezel etc. I know where the gear selections are and I have verification on the dash of what gear I'm in.

I know EXACTLY what I want but it's right where the stock shifter is.

You're right, I had a brain fart. I was thinking of the throttle. Us guys with the manny tranny have a whole different perspective on things.

Just run the shifter cable to the side of your seat and then clamp on a pair of vice-grips! Problem solved!!! :D I will take my job quote check now. :p

I have a couple of questions:
What would you "glass" in its place and where would you "relocate" the shifter without looking ghetto/redneck?

Ghetto/Redneck? thats an insult, you cannot use those two words in the same sentence. It has to be one or the other. If he uses vise grips for the shifter then it is redneck. If he uses a gold emblem hanging from the mirror for the shifter then it is ghetto, but please please don't associate the two togather. :D

It's a project I'm working on. And I'm looking into other alternatives right now.

I'll show pics once I'm happy with it, but basically I run a small pc in the trunk with a 12 volt computer power supply (opus)

Pc is athlon 2.4 ghz, runs 768 megs of ram, geforce video card, soundblaster live etc.

Vga cable runs down to the center console, and I run the system with a lilliput 7" vga touch screen monitor. Whole system is run from the screen. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse behind the seat that I use occasionally.

I have an XM tuner, GPS, and 802.11G antennas behind the back seat that you dont even see, xm, and gps both run to the computer. I'm running from the soundcard out to the "usaspec" aux input adapter into the factory headunit. Computer is setup to boot in under 30 seconds, so as soon as I get in the car I hit the button, all is from the inside of the car, pc is in the trunk you dont even hear the fan. I'm also using a bluetooth dongle that connects the pc to my cell phone (moto e815) whenever I get int he car, I can control the phone from the PC. PC has a 100 gig hard drive, and a USB DVD drive + burner under the passenger seat. From the driverseat I have unlimited, MP3, dvd, wifi, cell phone, dial up access, navigation, gps, games, stored media, internet, XM, yada yada yada yada, and everything that goes along with it. If I can find the right interface cable, theres even software that'll connect to the cars obd-II system.

Any other questions before you call me ghetto/redneck you ass-hat.

Looking to upgrade to 8" touch interface and have it molded in right in where the shifter is currently. I dont want to glass it into the dash because I'm trying to keep my factory headunit.

Looks like I might remote-faceplate a nice flip headunit and put the faceplate somewhere. Than mold the monitor in the dash but I havent decided yet.

Learn how to read.... I didnt call you ghetto/redneck... Yes there is another question that you still didnt answer the question about where you would move this shifter without the dash looking cluttered. Oh and about your A$$-hat comment I guess that just shows you amount of character or the lack there of.

Cruzn...my son and I have a bet. What OS are you running on the PC?

you already know what OS, on this system it's xp, well xplite to be exact. but I'm working on a linux pc with dot matrix monochrome 2.5" dash readout, it's going in my beater pickup. Purely mp3's if I ever get around to it. I'm only using XP in the lincoln because of the simplicity, plug and play capability, and everything (almost) on the market works with XP, dongles, accessories etc.

That was the whole point of this thread, looking for other peoples ideas because I can't think of anything. I was hoping somone would have something or know of some product out there. Maybe something manual or electric/electronic etc....

He was betting linux. He's a HUGE fan of linux. There's not much he can't make seemless with it. And he's got a bunch of ceritifications from Microsoft too...and indeed is working with beta versions of Vista....so he knows what he's talking about. That's how he makes his living. I am a big Bill Gates fan and I really like his products and what he's done to make my life better. But to be honest...I'm pretty impressed with what my son can do with linux.

Well, since this thread is already off topic, I think i'll throw my $.02 in for the linux vs windows debate.

Have you tried using Ubuntu linux? It's linux for everyone else. Based on Debian so it's easy as pie to work with. If you can read and use your mouse, you can get a PC running on Ubuntu. Try it out here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

I too at one time had a car PC setup. While I found windows to be the easiest setup, after some tinkering around with linux, I found it to be more customizable.

What about Knoppix? I tried that and thought it was pretty cool.

Knoppix is good as well. But its biggest selling point was the live-CD (which enables you to run the entire OS from a CD), however, other distros are doing this as well (including Ubuntu).

Anyways, the best thing to do is just install them both and find the one you like.

Yeah I tried to do a data recovery while using the LiveCd part of it. I forget which program I used to actually recover the data but it was all pretty cool. Once I get the new house and we have enough room to have both of our computers up and running I will run a full Linux system on one and Win XP (or the new Win OS if its out) on the other and then have a 2.4 GHZ wireless network to tie it all in together with my media server.
