Hey guys. So I grabbed a shift knob from Jamie while I was down in FL visiting to replace the one currently on my car because it looks like crap. So, I could have sworn I read something before in my Ford service manuals about replacing the shift knob, but I cant seem to find it now for some reason. Anyway, I have everything all pulled apart, but cant figure out how the hell to get the shifter off the metal rod thing. I remember something about a boot sliding down and removing 2 screws? But I just cant find it in the manual again. Any help?

I thought there was a slit in the leather in which something gets depressed and it slides off. Could be wrong, but I am on lunch and thought I would just type something.

If you've got the manual it's in there.

From what I remember, It needs to be in a certain position (either park or all the way back). Then the sleeve below the leather part will slide down exposing the two small set screws (they might be torx). Remove those two screws and it needs to be in park (I believe). Push in the button and slowly pull up on it.

Be very careful because there is a fragile OD connector in there that slides to connect.

It's been a while since I replaced mine so I'm going on memory (not the best).

Ohh, damn I just put it all back together! I was trying to slide that down, guess I just needed to push harder because I just did it on the replacement knob, and I see what you mean now.

When I was moving the shift knob back, I wasn't paying attention and broke a piece of the shift indicator plate, the close out part, that slides back and forth with the shifter depending on the gear, that closes the opening out. Now when its in park, you can see down into the opening.... bummer!

Well I got the nicer one in now, but I'll have to pull it all apart again when I get that other part that I broke.... oh well. It is what it is I guess. At least you don't notice it while its in gear.

Replace Shift Knob

!!! CAUTIOUSLY !!!
MARK VIII 97-98
1. Move the Shift Knob to either R or N position, slide the cylinder down and remove the two screws.
2. When you remove the original Shift Knob, be careful, the button might pop out!
3. Gently remove the electrical Contacts for the OD button!

MARK VIII 93-96
For the Mark VIII 93-96 it's important to change the OD button first because of the way the electrical contacts work:
1. Carefully take out the O/D button.
2. Take out the shift knob fastening;
3. Carefully remove the shift knob;
To install a new shift knob do these steps in reverse order because of the O/D button contacts! (It is possible to damage contacts of the O/D button!)
