Shift knob?

on the side facing the radio, down on the stem of the shifter is a thick staple like deal, use a small flat head and pry it out, then the shift knob will lift off.

i wonder if when they replaced my "neutral safety switch" if they changed that also.

I would not think so. The neutral switch is on the trans there should have been no need to mess with the shift lever.

Has anyone had their Black Shifter knob (whatever it is called, not sure offical term) fall out? Mine did some time ago, and the spring inside forces the Black knob to not go in correctly. I ended up cutting the spring in half, and now it stays in (Black Knob). Wondering, is it just easier to change out the shifter all together? Thanks, sorry to ask a question on a related post!!

When I reinstall do I just that big staple thing back in?

:shifty: I thing that would be a good thing...Or but it in the "STUFF" box...That's a box I have where I but parts that are left over when I work on my cars:eek::eek:

Yea after I read what I type I realized it was kind of a dumb question lol. I wish the Gen 2 shifter would work in my car.

That black knob is not returning properly because either the loop on the end has broken or just worn and jumped over the release mechanism of the shifter. Mine broke and I couldn't find another Mark VIII shifter knob so I found 1 out of a MN12 Tbird and put it in. You have to do a little cut and solder on the OD wire but no big deal. Sounds like you are prolly needing a new shift knob to me.

:( I never ment to imply that you where dumb...I feel there are no dumb questions. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask! I was telling you about how I always end up parts after working on my cars...Now thats dumb!LOL LOL!:D :D

I didn't take it that way no worries :D

Is there a aftermarket one?
I have seen one on ebay that is supposed to be for a Mark VIII, but I've never heard of anybody trying one out. Seems like they were woodgrain and had the OD button and sold for about $60. I've thought about going with a complete aftermarket shifter and just relocating the OD button and mounting the switch in the console.

 That sounds interesting....A giant Hurst shifter almost touching the roof!
back to the 60's lol lol;)

Yes, I do need a new shifter. I saw a mint Black one on ebay this weekend, but it went for more than I wanted to pay...owell. I will keep watching, and maybe visit some junk yards to "hunt" for one. I wanted that black one though...

Yep, My freinds fell out, It wouldn't stay back in so I drilled a small hole on the top of the button thingy that fell out & super glued the head of a rivet in it. I was able to pop it back in & it's holding & funcional for now. BTW, you can not see the rivet since it's on the inside of the shifter handle.
