Around 65-70 mph the steering wheel shakes violently and has a bit of on-center play.

Could this be caused by worn inner tie rods?

I've replaced both front upper control arms and lower ball joints.

when stopped, if i turn the wheel left to right, I can hear/feel a slight clunk that seems to be emanating from the steering gear.

Any ideas?

Wheels unbalanced, bent rims, split belts in tire(s). Start w/ the easy ish first. Jus take it to a NTB, Goodyear, etc and tell them your steering wheel shakes n have them check it out

tires were road force balanced about 2 weeks ago when I did the oil change.

and they only have 11,000 miles on them.

the steering wheel tends to have more than normal feedback over rough roads as well.

but its the amount of play that has me worried, as well as the "clunk" in the steering gear.

Not to mention I no longer trust my car to NTB.

only a bunch of idiots can strip 11 out of 20 lug nuts despite me telling them they are metric.

its possible a weight has been thrown off one of the wheels, and if they are as dumb as you say and stripped 11 of your lug nuts then they might have been just as careless when applying the weights to your wheels, i would take it back to them or another NTB and see if thats the problem, i bought my wheels and rims brand new and within a month they became unbalanced because it threw a weight off the tire

I also don't do ntb anymore (used to work for them). Yeaaa...u need that front end checked out. My steering wheel moves a good bit over slight bumpy roads. But I need ball joints and I'm ridin on low pros, but I don't get the clunk in the steering wheel tho, don't kno what that would be

+1.

If a weight came off ur new rims then they didn't stick the weights on good enough (assuming u have stick on weights)

Oh, and also OP, did they static balance your wheels, cuz that way of balancing sucks (static balance meaning weights only on one side of rim, typically inside)

Actually, static balancing is with a balance wheel.

I have an inside only balance on all 3 of our LSes. With a Hunter Road Force balance machine the balance is superb.

The f*ck is that contraption lol. U must be one of the lucky ones. Most of the customers that have left from the shops I've worked at (mainly pepboys) have came back for vibration issues and they'd be static balanced wheels. I use a Hunter now w/ the road force n all other types of fancy ish on it, and its by far the best balance machine I've used yet. I use stick-ons on my twenties and bang on and sticky for my stocks (no outside wheel weight showing)

Looks like a static/bubble balancer.

Is it just at those speeds? Like if you go faster does it quit or vice versa? To me, it sounds like worn suspension parts and unbalanced / out of balance tires.

i had the same problem recently, i just put more air in my tires, and the problem was fixed  im hoping thats it and nothing else is wrong

having low air in your tires can certainly cause your steering wheel to shake, and possibly make your car pull to the left or right but not likely, but i would assume that since he just had this his wheels balanced a couple weeks ago that they should be fine

the most common issue about that is the aligment and wheel balance. you should it have those things done, and it will dissapear, after that you can try replacing lower ball joints and new struts. and then new tires. i did all those things and now i can take curves at 90 mph ( dont try it tho) without a single problem, now i feel i have 100% control of the car.

It could be as simple as a flow tire. I've found the LS to be quite sensitive to just about anything that is slightly off. Check tire pressures, alignment and balance.

I work for TireWarehouse in RI. I also have a 2000 Lincoln LS. When I had my 20" wheels on my car I noticed a major vibration in the steering wheel at 60mph and above.
So I roadfoce balanced them and the balanced out perfect. The car was fine for a while but the vibration and shaking in the stering wheel just came back. So I sold the 20"s and put the factory 16" on the car Vibration went away. That was 3 months ago, I have also roadforce balanced the 16" wheels and the other thing that I check was what the car recommends for air pressure on the wheels. Now I thought that 32 psi all around is what it should be, well I was wrong, the 16" wheels call for 26psi in the front and 32psi on the rear. after I did that I noticed a huge difference in the ride of the car. vibration is almost all gone( I nee new tires they are dry rotting ) once I do that I think all will be well. I am putting a set of Falken Zeik Ze 912's on the car. for the money they are the best tire ou there. I also need an alignment.

You can go with the stock 17's, a lot nicer than the 16's

not sure about the falkens, when i bought the car the guy showed me a receipt from 2 weeks earlier when he had the tires put on, and they barely lasted 15,000 miles so i went with hankook's

I would check that. The sticker on the door post should show 30psi all around, 16" or 17" wheels. Those pressures look like you would have tons of oversteer. If the pressures were different front-to-rear, the lower pressure would be in the rear, where there is less weight.

Working on the car this weekend. I'll snap a pic of the sticker and post it. That also confused me also but the car handles better. I don't get it???????
