...I've got the dreaded rusty pan  - it is beginning to leak. Can it be repaired in-car? I'm thinking of trying the same "clay" epoxy covered with a thick coat of flex liquid epoxy that worked on a punctured pan, followed by a nice thick coat of no-rust primer and paint.....

I remember on the punctured pan the hardest part was using a propane torch for about an hour to thoroughly leach the oil from the surrounding metal.... I heated it and heated it..... with an empty pan....this time I'm thinking I'll use a quart of motor-flush first to make sure the pan is as clean as possible before I heat it. I'll be a little more nervous with the small INSIDE the pan fire this time I'm sure......but WTF.

Any suggestions or recommended techniques? No way I'm pulling the pan without trying to repair it.

I too have a rusted pan. It will be replaced soon with a nice used pan :D. I had thought about trying to repair it, but I think it is too far gone.
Be careful heating it...is the motor flush flammable? I would be afraid of heating it, if there were flammable fumes inside. I could be wrong though.
I see why you would want to avoid replacing it...not an easy job to do. I am paying someone else to do mine.
I knew a guy who was brazing an oil pan and it blew up in his face.

So there's the plan - but I'd like to hear from someone who has been successful. I'd like to cold-weld the rust pinhole, cover it with a nice thick coat of epoxy, then clean and rust-prevent the entire seam of the pass side cutout.....

Hey come on.... SOMEBODY has to have a success or failure story on this.... Please?

you can get this stuff at a truck stop that truckers use to fix small leaks on their fuel tanks, it's like a putty that hardens after you put it on. and it is fuel and oil compatable.

Like the stuff they used on Monster Garage where the Blastoline guy's welds leaked. That was funny.

I'm taking it to my body guy as he is a restoration specialist and my sissy mechanic's shop (mainly his shop foreman, a pr*ck of the first order) doesn't want to "risk it".

Risk what? Admitting what idiots they were for changing the oil without repairing it last week? I mean, these guys are GOOD.... but sometimes you want to sic Carlos Mencia on them....

My body man instantly said, "JB Weld, dude" and they're draining it on Wednesday and grinding/cleaning/repairing/painting it Thursday. They say it should be no problem unless the whole weld is nasty.

I'll let everybody know how it turns out.

Hey, I posted this in another thread, but I'm ordering a fender-mount cruise module/actuator this Friday if nobody on LVC has a good one for a '94 they want to sell.

Peace all....

Good luck John, hope it works out for you. I wish I could do that, mine has too much rust, I wouldn't trust it.
