Who at Ford had the dumbass idea to put 20mm lug nuts on a car and put a 19mm lug wrench in the trunk?
:shifty:
I honestly believe that auto engineers, not just Ford, do stupid stuff just for sh!ts and giggles. I have seen various stuff on many different brands that just dont make sense. They know the end consumer is going to be left shaking their head. Kind of like cartoonist that put "hidden" scenes in animated movies.

The same jack ass that wired the harness in the seat in front of the lumbar support.

That is the reason I tossed that stupid scissor jack out.

really? i knew the lugs sucked and the factory wrench never really fit well, but i just thought that was because the lugs lose their shape so easily. theyre actually different sizes though?

wow

If the lugs are not distorted, then you have aftermarket lugs. The Sebring lugnuts are 13/16' and the factory lugs are 3/4". I'm packing both, since the jack uses the 3/4" wrench (or 19 mm) and my sebring lug nuts are 13/16" (or 20 mm).

To the best of my knowledge, all LS factory builds included 19 mm lug nuts, but distorted lugs, caused by using impact wrenches with high torque, tend to have that stainless skinny jacket rotate partially around the inside solid steel, making the lugs not fit on the factory wrench. If your lugnuts have been distorted, you may be able to take a 3/4" socket (12 point) and hammer it on until it can turn the lug without slipping around it. The fact that your lug wrench is 19 mm, tends to reinforce the notion that no LS was produced with anything larger than that.

The lugs look factory to me. Most of them are rounded off the first 1/8" or so on the ends. And they're all pretty well rusted up on the inside, despite the fact that they're closed end.

All I was trying to do was change the fuel filter. Went to take off the front wheel and couldn't get the lugs off with the wrench in the trunk. Ended up hammering a 19mm socket onto each one just to get enough grip to turn them. Then I had to hammer them out of the socket.

Took them up to the auto parts store and got 5 new open end solid lug nuts for that wheel (thats all they had). While I was there I found a 20mm socket and the old nuts fit in there perfectly, with only minor play. A 13/16" socket (which I already had) slipped around the lugs with relative ease. The 20mm would work just fine, so I went ahead and got that so I could get the rest of the crappy lugs off when the other 15 new lugs that I had to order come in.

Now Ill have lugs that actually FIT in the lug wrench so if I have a flat, I can change it. Id have been SOL before.

basically, are you saying that your OEM lug wrench is a size too small for the lugs? my stock OEM lug wrench never fit from the beginning either if thats the case..

that makes 2 of us that couldn't change the tire in the case of a blow-out on a 13 hour trip. thanks lincoln

I guess that must have been one of the improvements in '03; the lug wrench in my '06 fits its lug nuts just fine, and the same was true of my '04.

+1 Your lugs have just been trashed. 19mm on all models.

The lug nuts were improved in '03 and now they retain their shape so that the lug wrench CONTINUES to fit them after they've been off a few times.

The factory lugs are 19 mm, not 20 mm. You almost certainly have replacement lugs, probably Chrysler OEMs.

My 02 factory lugs were replaced free by Lincoln (Canada) under the 4yr/80000km free maintenance, at around 60000 km. They also paid for front and read brake pads and rotors when they wore out. And wiper blades too.

I cant even use a 19MM on mine because they are so messed up. I have to use a 12 point 3/4 I think. To make things worse the first (and only) time the spare was needed my wife discovered that there was no jack in the trunk. Just tools and a tire.
