Hey guys, I have a slight problem, under a load on my 2000 V6 with 98k, say when im going up a hill, at certain times my car pings, i use Shell 93 octane all the time, im guessing my knock sensor is shot, the car runs perfectly fine with averging 17 mpg in town. I found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KNOC...hZ019QQitemZ8029619739QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
and it is relativly cheap. I was wondering if anyone has replaced this, and is it a DIY. BTW, what do you guys think are the best fuel system cleaners? I have used the Run Rite 3 step cleaner, but it is garbage, and I have also used BG 44K. Thankls

I have the same problem. I have only 80xxx on mine. I used QT 93 octane. When I used the STP injector cleaner, it quited my pings, but with the next tankful it reappears. I thought maybe it was the cheap oil the dealer uses, as I always asked for Mobil1 when I go to JiffyLube. But this time I had to go to the dealer for the window regulator replacement. There is a knock sensor? What does it do? I don't need a sensor to know its knocking and pinging. LOL

the sensor tells the ecm when knock is present so the ecm can make timing and/or air/fuel adjustments to stop the knock. There are limits to the adjustments the ECM will make so if there is a component failure (say fuel injector or MAF sensor or extensive load from a bad drivetrain componenet, etc.) then you will still have knock. Doesn't mean the knock sensor is bad.

I wouldn't go replacing the knock sensor on just a guess that it's the problem. All sorts of things can create knock...the knock sensor just tells the ECM when it's there. In fact the owners manual even states that a little knocking from time to time is not cause for concern.

That said you should get the car looked at by a dealer. They can log whether or not the knock sensor is reporting knock and replace it if necessary.

If the sensor is telling the ECM there's knock there and the ecm is retarding the timing as much as it is able then you have another problem.

Not sure on V6 but replacing on V8 looks like a HUGE pita....

+1

never heard of a knock sensor going bad. if your pinging - it's likely a/f mix issue or a slightly vacuum leak that is only showing up under load.

I would start with the standard stuff - fuel filter, ...etc

I just replaced my fuel filter a few weeks ago, and i always use Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 with a Mobile 1 filter, do you think i should clean my MAF sensor?

i used to have the same problem on my 00 5spd. it got a lot better when I did valve cover gaskets and coils and got the oil out of the spark plug wells.

it still seemed to ping slightly.

I asked about it on this forum and was told a lot of the same things as you. Someone also suggested changing the EGR value as a possible fix. Recently I replaced the EGR valve and bought the knock sensor but did not put it in because I was told that I needed to take the lower intake (i think) off to get to it. I still have it but it does not look like what you are looking at. Mine looks like a cable with a big loop at the end of it.

for now it seems to ping a little every once in a while but I hardly ever notice it any more.

let me find the old thread
