Has anyone replaced the 00-02 3rd brake light with the 03 and up LED third brake light that sits high up by the headliner?

I am going to attempt this mod.

never heard of anyone doing it yet. what are you gonna do about the giant housing on the bottom? give it a try

Can someone with a 2nd generation LS take a picture of their third brake light from inside the car? Is it attached to the headliner? How exactly does it attach?

I will either remove the bulbs out of the bottom housing or remove it altogether.

Sorry, I don't have a picture right now. It attaches to the roof of the car. The headliner then attaches (or fails to most of the time) to the third brake light. (The light holds the liner up, not the other way around.)

+1

The headliner is molded around the third brake light.

Here are some pic's showing the 00-02 LS with the high mount LED brake lamp with the original removed. Note the last pic shows how far the LED lamp comes down so if you don't have a tinted rear window you will have to add a strip of tint to hide the housing. Also don't forget to get the capacitor for the high mount LED brake lamp thats located under the package tray!!!

Very nice mtggtmmtg! What all did you do to mount the LED brake light? Will I need to drive screws through my headliner? Is that an OEM unit?

Also, very nice with the OEM nav in a first gen. You are the first person that I have seen that has successfully done this.

Yes, it is an oem unit from an 03 LS. I've added pics of the LED brake lamp & capicitor, as you can see the unit has 2 clips in the center that will hold the unit in place & instead of the 2 mounting bolts I used double sided tape so I did'nt have to remove the headliner. I will also add pics of other LED lamps that I had in case you want a different look.

Thanks, most people go with aftermarket, but I really like the THX sound. Unfortunately I still have the 03 nav DVD that has limited coverage for my area. The LS is not very popular in my area so I have'nt been able to find anyone with the newest DVD map version to try out or make a copy of and since they(Navteq) wants $199 for the update I may just buy a Garmin for $99 so I can use it in my other vehicles.

That LED low mount 3rd brake light is a nice looking alliterative.

Nice clean instalation......Good job mtggtmmtg.

Thanks, but it's just setting there(not installed, just giving Justin00LS some other options if he can't find an LS one). If you notice in the pic's you'll see the high mount LED. I had 4 different LED lamp units and deceided the the 03-06 LS LED looked the best.

What did you do about the hole where the original 3rd brake light was located?

I took out the original package tray trim and replaced it w/ one from an 03 LS. I got the LED lamp unit/LED capicitor & package tray trim(in black) for only $10 & bought the tan carpet for $20. If you don't want to replace the trim you could just fill the hole( shape a piece of foam to the contour and cover w matching carpet)
