Removing wheel speed sensor (ABS)

I'm trying to remove what I believe to be the bad wheel sensor on drivers front. I guess I have to take the wheel off and tap it out from the "outside". Is there anyway to remove it without removing the wheel?

The reason I ask is because I'm going to a salvage yard to get a "new" sensor. I know there is going to be pretty much no way to the wheel off just to get a sensor...
 
Well, I guess you could, but it would be a bitch.

Easiest way to do it is drop the wheel, brake caliper and rotor.

then, get yourself a 10mm socket with an extension, remove the 10mm bolt from the braket that holds the sensor to the brake rotor shield, and tap it out.

You could do it with the wheel on, I suppose. Never tried it like that though.
 
Mine is loose enough after the 10mm bolt to just pull it through. Mine's bad also, the ABS light is always on.. GRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Marine, I noticed that when I pulled the sensor out of the junk car. Slid right out after I took out the 10mm bolt. It turns out the one in my car became one with the spindle. I had one hell of a time getting out, pretty much using a hammer and punch. After finally getting mine out, I thought I was through the hard part; nope. When I went to slide the new sensor in, it wouldn't fit; the hole was too small for some reason. At that point I resorted to some like 20 grit sandpaper trying to get the hole big enough. Well, that worked a little bit but I still had a VERY hard time getting the new one in. The farthest it would go is still about an 1/8" from all the way in. Needless to say, after all this BS the light still turns on when I go over 20 mph. So I guess you can see how I feel about that damn sensor!!! I'm done now...
 
Pretty sure, because it started lighting up right after I got done with swapping the water pump, and the t-stat. When changing the t-stat the wire kept getting in the way; but at the time I didn't realize it was the ABS wire. So logically I replaced that one, being driver's front. The fact that I couldn't even get it in all the way probably isn't helping much, but I was just over it. One day I'll just get a new spindle and sensor...
 
just get a dremel and open it up, normal prob. they measure a air gap that is a couple mm and you just opened it WAY up also check the excitor ring for different gaps if any are different it will throw a light i see them all day long on taurus's and windstars where they crack and it just makes one gap bigger than the others then the computer goes haywire and throws a code and how do you know that the sensor from the junk yard was good. also what code did you get??

I cleaned off the excitor ring, it was covered in thick brake dust; didn't notice any cracks but next I'll check. I've got a lot of unknowns, don't know if the junk yard sensor works, and don't know what code I have.

I did try to pull the codes from the ABS test box under the passenger side headlight panel. I read on another forum that you ground out one of the contacts, the turn key to on, engine off and it should tell me what code. I didn't get anything from that though. I think my situation is a little different though because the light doesn't come on immediatley, just after I pass 20 mph for the first time then it stays on. Down the road I'll get a brand new sensor, and borrow a dremel along with get the codes pulled. Right now I'm just starting a new job, but once that settles down and I have some extra money I'll deal with it. Luckily it doesn't seem to be affecting drivability besides not traction control and ABS; but it never rains here anymore anyway, :P ...
 
Haha, nah on a gen I all I have to do is pop out the button panel for the message center; that's where the light is... Don't think the thought hasn't crossed my mind...
