Red brake light on the dash?

What does this warning light mean? It started coming on today, intermittently....

Well, if the Mark VIII is like most other Fords, then it means you need to check your brake fluid level as it is borderline low.

usually when the light comes on it is because the fluid level is low, which often happens because the brake pads are worn. do yourself a favor, and check the pads, or have someone check them...don't just keep adding fluid without making sure there is plenty of material left on the pads.
is the pedal firm and at a normal height when you step on it?

the pedal is decently firm. i was hoping to not have to change the pads before winter. They stop the car fine at the end of the 1/4....When I had different tires put on the front of the car last week, I was told the brakes were in great shape, and the pads looked fine to me as well.

mine comes on intermintently but i think its because my ebrake has a bad ground... im gonna check the fluid in my mark now though...

my ebrake cable disconnected from the left rear 2 months ago - could that be causing it?

Low fluid is never good. The Brake system is sealed - the fluid has to go somewhere, either leaks out or is filling the void of worn pads.

Don't doubt the parking brake. Mine is severed from my left caliper, which reduces the tension in the cable causing the pedal to hang low. Try this, take your foot and pull up on the parking brake pedal. Does the light go off? Mine sure as hell does. The light is for warning about low fluid AND the ebrake being engaged.

Thing is, my light is very intermittent. I will check my fluid level, and try the parking brake thing you suggested. Mine is also severed at the left caliper.

Yeah mine isn't always on. Sometimes the pedal sits high enough for it not to make the light go on, and sometimes it sinks just low enough to trigger the light. I'm about to zip-tie that mother up so it will stop.

I checked my fluid was a tad low put some in it and the light went off thanks guys... I think my rear pads are just a little low
